The rum cask influence gives this rich golden amber single malt an exotic flair. From warm and welcoming aromas of exotic guava and coconut, sugar coated almonds, apricots and a touch of citrus entice the nose. Nose: a bit of a generic ‘crowd pleasing’ profile, but not bad at all. It’s rather sweet, with a lot of apricot aromas, alongside candy apples, butter pastry and hints of cinnamon. Vanilla and sweet oranges. Also hints of fresh oak and coconut shavings. Honey. It’s a dessert style whisky, and the usual Jura funk is nowhere to be found. Then comes the next layer of sweet and fruity characteristics - sultana, green apple and a twist of blood orange peel combine well with the golden syrup and floral honey from the nose, plus icing sugar. There are also notes of vanilla, dessicated coconut and a good pinch of baking spices (especially cinnamon). Late hints of powdered ginger and cocoa are joined by a drying grass-like quality, which is most reminiscent of raw sugar cane and straw. Mouth: a bit watery, and still quite sweet. A lot of banana notes with vanilla fudge and honey. Stewed yellow apples. In the second half the oak comes out, with more vanilla as well some tangy spice like ginger and nutmeg. Maybe a pinch of salt as well. Rum casks are becoming increasingly popular over recent months it seems and Jura are the latest brand to join the party. A couple of the best examples that we have sampled have been quite smoky and the combination seems to work well. Jura's peat smoke is much more subtle and just gives a savoury suggestion, rather than being a dominant feature here.
