About this deal

Wine Spectator Awards Perfect Score to World-Renowned Port Producer Dow's 2007 Vintage Port, from the Oporto, Portugal based producer, has been awarded a perfect 100-point score from Wine Spectator magazine in the May 31 issue. From the outstanding 1947 vintage, this stunning port is deep and rich with nice weight and a dry liquorice finish. They will usually mature a little earlier than the very rare declared years, but can be every bit as good as some other Vintage Ports. This fact makes the blender’s job more difficult and demanding but the wine that is finally bottled is superb and is the reason why Dow’s Old Tawny Ports regularly win the top awards around the world for their unique style and quality. The product and allergen information provided has been supplied by the producer/manufacturer of the products.

Excellent aromas of black berry fruits, combined with a hint of violet character Packed with juicy fruit flavours, peppery tannins, and a long slightly dry finish. Wine profile: When young, Bomfim wines are purple-black, austere, complex and intensely concentrated; they are characterised by very fine peppery tannins. Single Quinta Vintage Ports are made in a similar way to other Vintage Ports in that they're bottled, without filtration, after a couple or so years in barrel and continue to mature in bottle from there. The old vines add further to the intensity of the wine as they make up a very large percentage of the vineyard. As with Quinta do Bomfim, the best Ports from Senhora de Ribeira are used to make Dow’s Vintage Ports in the great and rare ‘Declared’ years. In classic years when Dow's declare a Vintage Port, Bomfim provides the backbone of these blends, but in the interim years the wines are usually of such a high quality that they are bottled as a single vineyard wine.

Dow's 20 Year Old Tawny Port was relaunched in 2019, after an absence from the market for a number of years. In the unlikely event that you're not happy with your purchase, for whatever reason, then please do get in touch so that we can make amends. The fruit from Bomfim and Senhora da Ribeira form the backbone of their impressive vintage ports and, outside of vintage years, they are also the source of very good value Single Quinta vintage Ports. In the good years when Dow’s does not declare a Vintage, the best Ports of Quinta do Bomfim are carefully selected and bottled as Dow’s Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port. Vintage Ports such as the remarkable Dow 1896, the 1927, 1945, 1955, 1963, 1966, 1970, 1980 and the Dow 1994 are all legends in the history of this great wine. Three granite ‘lagares’ for foot treading are complemented by three ‘robotic’ lagares, designed by the Symington family and installed in the quinta’s winery in 2001. On the nose there are creamy, blackberries and black cherries, slightly herbal notes (good), smoke and wet stone, sweet.

Spice and pepper balance the black chocolate flavours and these are very evident in all Bomfim Ports. Over the centuries, the winemakers at Bomfim have evolved a style that suits this particular vineyard: fermentations are a little longer, resulting in a drier Port wine that has become the hallmark of Dow’s. A small chapel dedicated to the ‘Lady of the River’ (literally: Senhora da Ribeira) has stood here for centuries and gave the quinta its name. Graham's extraordinary quality is the result of the unique characteristics of the five vineyards that contribute to the Vintage Port. The remainder of the vineyard was replanted as follows: 21% in 2001 and 34% from 2004, the latter involving mainly Touriga Nacional vines. The Symington family brings the legacy of creating intense and tannic concentrated wines with the DOW wines, which age elegantly and are scented with mint and violet aromas. Three innovative robotic lagares have now been installed at the winery, and Vintage Port is made there in non-declared years and released en primeur. Dows 40 Year Old Tawny Port A beautiful translucent amber-golden colour and an almost transparent rim with exquisite fragrances of delicate dry fruit coupled with a hint of fine marmalade. When young Quinta do Bomfim wines are austere, complex and concentrated with very fine peppery tannins.

The very high percentage of Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional planted on the estate result in the powerful aromas of mint and violets in the finest Ports from Bomfim.

The terroir is so diverse, from mountain to maritime vineyards, hot and dry to cool and green; producing Port, light whites to full bodied reds and delicious rosés. Dow’s Ports avoid an over-rich style and requires a very high degree of skill in wine making and great experience in selecting the finest wines of each year and each vineyard. One of the Douro Valley’s finest vineyards, Bomfim is the heart of some of the company’s greatest Ports, having provided wines for Dow’s Vintage Ports ever since it was acquired in 1896.
