About this deal

A large part of the training has to do with the type of breed the hunting dog is, but generally, all are very trainable. It's old, first published in 1977, and I don't know how well it fits in with today's beliefs on dog training, but DH found bits of it really good for our working gundogs. However, there are countless books on what gundog is best for you, where, and what you’re hunting for. I do gun dog training with my 7 month old and did a puppy course with them as well so you can find places that take young dogs. Lead work and heeling is one area especially where I think trainers should be more open about what a nightmare process it can be.

Contrary to the impression you may get from a training manual, you can be quite flexible about how you teach a command. Every book in The Pet Gundog series comes with 10 free videos to help you get started, as well as a special offer to join Lez Graham’s The Pet Gundog Club. Force-free training is a relatively new arrival in the Gundog community, and the books were written several years before this change was made. The information contained in the book is sound common sense but something which we can miss out on unless told.

My advice for good HPR books is to read a few books on pointer/setter training, a few books on spaniel training and a few books on retriever training. The one downside is that it’s more pointed to flushing dogs like his retrievers rather than your pointing breeds.

Yet when you try to put them into practice with your first pup, somehow the instructions don’t seem to bear any relation to what you have in front of you. That’s what this book covers, and it does so in a step-by-step way rather than taking a theoretical edge. Forget fancy props, the quickest way to get on top of misbehaviour is to run as fast as possible to the dog and scruff it.While the book focuses mostly on flushing birds, rather than retrieving, it is still a great start at training a retriever. Author, Mentor, Trainer all rolled into one, Lez's passion for dogs led her to gaining a Masters Degree in Canine Behaviour and Psychology and dedicating most of her time to not only writing about dog behaviour, but helping people repair their relationships with their family dog and have harmony at home.

There are chapters on breeds, choice of puppy, pre-training, and all phases of training including equipment, obedience training, water work and advanced training, shooting days, field trials, good mouths and bad, and the wildfowler's dog. Keep the lead on but let it drop loosely over his back and immediately rush to catch him as he takes off for the nearest flower-bed. I have yet to come across a pup that didn’t know instantly whether it was off the lead and swiftly work out the implications.
