This was our first family tent, after many years running DofE Vango was a brand I had come to trust for quality and this tent didn't disappoint. The Vango Icarus 500 DLX is one those ‘old-school’ tents that try to deliver on the promise of being a 5-berth tent. One of the poles developed a small crack after about a year but we just wrapped some duct tape around it and never had another issue. In the main living area we placed our roof box to one side to use for clothes/valuables storage (as it was lockable) and meant that it we didn;t take space up in the bedroom with clothes bags/luggage. It is inexpensive, has plenty of accessories and versatile enough to serve the whole family, providing more than enough space, comfort, and weather protection.

Normally, these 3-berth master bedrooms would never accommodate 3 adults; however, in this instance, the Vango Icarus 500DLX just might. Did not stand up to windy conditions on recent trip-two more split poles and although rest of tent good quality and design, can't recommend due to this. I have used few time this tent for family ( 2 Adults and 3 kids)camping holiday, it is good size tent and well designed. A side mesh door allows for insect-free airflow, and the parallel-zip front door can extend out as a canopy using awning poles (not included).Yes it made the floor more 'homely' but because we were on a very sloght slope it just kept slipping all over. NEGATIVES: Front door hooks are high up so I extended them with a hair band loop to reach door toggle more easily. Being able to stand up is a big bonus over my “umbrella style” quick pitch tent, which is ideal for overnight stops. Regards the problem of the sloping door letting water in when coming in and out we got an adventure tarp for the front to solve this problem and can be used on the tent or awning front door or with some hocus pocus and fiddling the side door if needed. Its early stages of our use but the very first night absolutely chucked it down for hours and the tent was bone dry inside in morning- there may be worse conditions to come but that’s a very good start for the tent.

We had a pole snap early on in its life but I think this was our fault as we tried to put it up with the inside attached to the fly sheet. This means it is relatively easy to carry, and does not take up a lot of precious boot space in the back of your car. Snapped tension bands, guy rope tighteners did not hold, leaks via side door, awning ripped from trim near clips, another clip had failed stitching, stitching incomplete around one of sleeping compartment doors.Amazing tent Im still using this tent, I've had it for 4 years and used it about 2-3 times per year.
