About this deal

I have no interest on subscribing to Tidal or similar streaming service and hence no experience with MQA renderer. I have raised a ticket with then, but if this is not resolved I will be taking the unit back for a refund, a great pity really! Quick to install thanks to the supplied USB cable; Switching to different output media under macOS is easy.

It's a very clever design (a fully analog discrete filter type) we've been developing for many years. The full benefit of the ZEN DAC Signature V2’s balanced circuit design can be heard when connected to an amp or active speakers equipped with a balanced input. As a company, iFi has always been very keen on fitting the most accurate clock it can to its products, to the extent where from an objectivist point, even this relatively low example is over specified. It's even better if you use iFi's own low noise power supply; it really gave the sound more focus and weight, when I added it. And lastly the construction and design the construction is great all metal and has a nice weight to it, and lastly the design it looks like it came out of the late 70s with a touch of today’s design and it makes it stand out just the right amount.DACs – essentially tiny chips that convert the audio before it is output through the device’s, say, 3. Anyone looking for a USB DAC would be mad not to consider it (it's quirky shape is not it's best feature though). These under-the-hood advancements aren’t, of course, obvious to the naked eye, which would have some trouble telling the new Zen DAC from its predecessor looking at the two side by side. It glows blue to indicate it is playing an MQA Studio file, which has either been approved in the studio by the artist/producer or has been verified by the copyright owner.

As well, if you have a pair of powered speakers and are looking for a higher resolution source, the Zen Blue has you covered. Also when I connect the external speakers of the computer through the RCA inputs that the DAC has you can hear the difference. I bought a pair of DT-1990 Pro, and following the recommendation of another review, I also bought the A-20 Beyerdynamic amp. I will probably get the Ifi power supply at some point but I think that’s more important if you’re wanting to drive high impedance headphones. The variable setting applies volume control to the audio signal, enabling the ZEN DAC Signature to act as a preamp to connect directly to a power amp. For someone who starts his adventure with good sound quality this DAC/AMP brings the music to another level that probably cannot be reached without DAC/AMP. I have to say, now, I would comfortably point to the Zen DAC as an entry to the Audiophile world, without a doubt. If you are going to listen to music with a quality of 128k or if you don’t have good headphones, the purchase is not worth much. On/over-ear headphones with relatively low impedance require more power – press PowerMatch to increase the level of drive.

On the back there is a switch for fix / variable, if you set it to variable and turn up the volume control on the front, you can still regulate the volume via Windows. Enveloped in the Space Blue finish now associated with our Signature products, the ZEN DAC Signature has been designed to be a DAC, pure and simple. I have my DAC feeding into a pair of active ADAM Audio TV5 studio monitors with pseudo ribbon tweeters (mono amplified on each speaker). Awards, our team of review experts first-time-tested or revisited 15 DACs from the biggest brands in the business – AudioQuest, iFi, Chord Electronics, Cambridge Audio, FiiO and Helm Audio – and these are the six we’d most heartily recommend for portable phone, desktop and hi-fi system use. The highs are nice and bright, the mids are more clearly defined, and the True Bass is something to behold. The first, Power Match, is essentially gain adjustment to help accommodate the varying sensitivity of headphones, while True Bass is for boosting the bass presence in a mix. Even listening through the Grados, the least revealing pair of the trio of headphones we mainly use, the V2’s sonic step-up is plain as day. and an asynchronous USB Type B input, plus customisation sound modes, full MQA audio decoding (beneficial for Tidal Hi-Fi Plus subscribers) and the ability to work in a budget hi-fi system as well as with a computer/laptop, the Zen DAC V2 doesn’t only sound excellent but is also more versatile than its aforementioned peers. These headphones are, without exaggeration, one of the best in the world and come very close to the wickedly expensive electrostatic headphones from Stax. It’s not portable in the sense that the Audioquest DragonFly or Cyrus soundKey are – the Zen is about the size of a small paperback, so it’s too large for a pocket.
