Modern Philosophy” дотор жишээ нь: философичдын танилцуулга (нийт 3 бүлэг), Logic, Language, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Mind, Ethics, Aesthetics, Political Philosophy, God гэсэн бүлгүүд байна. At the same time, Kenny offers a concise and usable overview of each individual protagonist, which makes it an ideal book of reference for future projects. His arguments range from the problem of Aristotelian motion in a modern scientific context, [13] to the ability of contingent beings to cause eternality in other contingent beings. It should be reminded, however, that one should be prepared to read this work with patience and diligence.

The 22 chapters of this history are lucidly written and with enough humour in them to cheer up the educated general reader even in the midst of the most arid of philosophical discussions.

The start of the 2020 and the quarantine oddly enough had its benefits, it gave me the opportunity to finish it.

The only minor issue is in relation to trhe way this book is structured: I am not 100% sure that splitting each period into two parts (a relatively short history of the individual philosophers, followed by an analysis by thematic area) is necessarily the best approach, as it may cause a loss of focus on the system of thought and contribution of the individual philosopher. Portraits of Kenny hang in the British Academy, London, and at Balliol College and Rhodes House, Oxford. Very substantively, he outlined the philosophical concepts that one might encounter in a philosophy course, albeit in a much more interesting and readable prose.

However, as I'll try to spell out below, there are some unfortunate gaps in Kenny's own exposition, especially for readers whose interests tend toward 20 th century continental philosophy: this audience will have to look elsewhere for filling in those gaps (or, to vary the image, reading this book will leave their feet rather too dry). Nonetheless, the author tries to mention every aspect of philosophy briefly, and I had to further study these topics to widen the area of my knowledge. As the first book since Bertrand Russell's 1945 A History of Western Philosophy to offer a concise single-author review of the complete history of philosophy from the pre-Socratics to the modern masters of the 20 th century, Kenny's work fills a critical gap in the modern philosophy reading list and offers valuable guidance for the general reader of philosophy an ideal starting point for anyone with an interest in great thinkers and the family lines of philosophical evolution. In regards to periods and movements, multiple times Kenny made helpful points of clarification such as, among other examples, points at the beginning or end of presenting each period or philosophers having been credited for saying things they had not.

Specially written for a broad popular readership, Kenny's lucid and stimulating history will become the definitive work for anyone interested in the people and ideas that shaped the course of Western thought. Kenny candidly describes the predicament of the beginning of the universe, which both atheists and agnostics face, writing, "According to the Big Bang Theory, the whole matter of the universe began at a particular time in the remote past. In the preamble to the "Freud to Derrida" chapter, Kenny recounts that "by the middle of the twentieth century all this had changed. You will be gratified at the end of the journey, a lot of things in European culture would make more sense. Though the chapter does not take in anything routinely associated with the continental tradition, it is hardly monolithic. An academic scholar will find the work too simplistic while a casual reader will find it much too difficult to handle.

This book is no less than a guide to the whole of Western philosophy-the ideas that have undergirded our civilization for two-and-a-half thousand years. The individual volumes of Sir Anthony Kenny's acclaimed History of Western Philosophy have been hailed as "wonderful, authoritative, hugely rewarding" (Times Higher Education Supplement) and "genial and highly accessible" (London Review of Books). A Brief History of Western Philosophy is a stimulating, impressive work by one of Britain′s leading philosophers.

To consider the first of these: Kenny seems to regard these recent, but deep divisions as standing features of the philosophical landscape, since he claims that "well-meaning attempts to bring together proponents of the different styles of philosophizing met with only limited success in the second half of the century" (p. I should note at the outset that I have not read the preceding three volumes and so I cannot comment on the extent to which the present volume dovetails with the previous ones, nor can I judge its success at bringing the series to a conclusion.
