About this deal

The water, which is of excellent quality, comes from the hills of Tarlogie, and is used both for driving the water-wheel and for distilling operations.’ I'd enjoyed the Nectar D'or, but thought that it should have been stronger to get the full pleasure from it. It doesn't have an age statement but is in the 9-10 year range. It certainly has more character than the standard 10 - thanks both in part to higher ABV and the careful selection of very good oak.

Fairly standard American oak, unless something can find a fact or two to hit me with. Missouri is one of the main states that supply wood to the big cooperages, too, so this is well and truly looking as if the wood is in the standard territory. Although there’s talk of “designer” casks here and there among the commentary, so I’m hoping someone can correct me. Glenmorangie, like all distilleries and breweries in Britain, suffered terribly between 1920 and 1950, with Prohibition and then the Great Depression in the United States reducing whisky sales. The distillery was effectively mothballed between 1931 and 1936. The depression ended with World War II, but the war effort left fuel and barley in short supply and the distillery was again mothballed between 1941 and 1944. [6] Exports of whisky were important during the war, but enemy action disrupted and destroyed deliveries to the United States and Canada. Nose: I don’t notice any new elements, although it’s cleaned up a bit (no more dust). It may have lost some heaviness, but it’s also become more crisp and articulate. Jazz fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth released an album named The Sixteen Men of Tain in 2000. [30] If that’s the case, there’s no room for experimentation, trials and – let’s be honest – a bit of fun. This will give us some weeks in the summer and winter to just have a play and lay down some exciting new spirit.’Musty oak, honey, dried orchard fruit, nutmeg, wax beans, aloe vera and touches of vanilla, caramel and banana taffy. Glenmorangie distillery (pronounced with the stress on the second syllable: listen ⓘ; the toponym is believed to derive from either Gaelic Gleann Mòr na Sìth " vale of tranquillity" or Gleann Mór-innse " vale of big meadows") [3] is a distillery in Tain, Ross-shire, Scotland, that produces single malt Scotch whisky. We live in an age where we are bombarded by stories about the wood, and many major figures in the whisky community do nothing but recycle these wood-fetishes without a second thought. But we should examine what is being said.

Here is the crucial step in tasting whisky: Paradoxically, diluting the whisky doesn’t water down its flavor, instead, it opens up the spirit and releases even more nuances.

To keep from overpowering the single malt, the barrels made from these staves were toasted, compared to the traditional heavy char, and then filled with bourbon. The bourbon “donor” is undisclosed, but Glenmo works a lot with Brown-Forman so it could be a whiskey in that family. After four years in these toasted casks, the American whiskey was dumped and the barrels shipped to Scotland. The changes of the Victorian era find echoes nearly 120 years later, when Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits arm of French luxury goods giant LVMH, buys Glenmorangie from the Macdonald family.

The initial Astar expression was discontinued in 2012 because of the expense of sourcing the casks but, since the acquisition of Glenmorangie by French luxury goods group LVMH, Dr Lumsden has invested in four times the number of casks. He said: ‘I’m starting to get much more volume of this coming through;I think it’s important to maintain quality,’ adding that the reborn Astar was ‘a limited expression, and we’ll see how it goes with people’. The Astar’s extraordinary casks are hewn from hand-selected slow-grown oak trees from the Ozark mountains of Missouri, and meticulously crafted to exacting specifications, to ensure they impart their maximum flavour to our delicate Highland spirit.” Seasoned for two years and lightly toasted, heavily charred and seasoned with Bourbon for a further four years, the casks were then shipped to Scotland and filled with Glenmorangie spirit. It is made from 'slow growth, air seasoned, heavily toasted, lightly charred, ex-bourbon American oak barrels'.Palate: Raisin sweet at first and then the white spices. Honey with lots of fruits; mainly papaya. Nuts. And freshly baked Danish butter biscuits. Once they arrived in the Highlands they were filled with Glenmo spirirt and left to mature for 5+ years. Bottled at cask strength, the Astar is experimental Glenmorangie in all of its bespoke ex-Bourbon cask greatness. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to get to drinkin’ and dive into this unique offering.
