About this deal

This is a very dark, hard-boiled novel and it is credited with helping start the noir school of British crime fiction. At the 2000 Stinkers Bad Movie Awards, the film received four nominations: Worst Picture, Worst Director (Kay), Worst Actor (Stallone), and Worst Remake/Sequel. Novela negra entretenida y fácil de leer, con todos los elementos del género y una buena dosis de acción. In the late 1960s, a relaxation in film censorship produced an increase in dark, uncompromising films, with many directors pushing the boundaries of acceptability.

Richard Weaver in Films and Filming praised the realism of the film, describing it as "crime at its most blatant", [89] [92] while George Melly writing in The Observer confessed to vicarious enjoyment of it, but admitted it was "like a bottle of neat gin swallowed before breakfast. not bad, but very much of its time, and I don't think I could have followed the plot if I hadn't read the book. One of the most controversial later novels was Billy Rags (1973) – the story of a convicted robber and his attempts to escape from prison. On its general release in the North of England, Chibnall notes it had a "very strong first week", before an unseasonal heatwave damaged cinema attendance.

Born in Manchester in 1940, he grew up in the tough environs of postwar Humberside, attending Hull Art School before heading to London.

At the wake, Jack continues questioning mourners and well-wishers about what happened to his brother, drawing the ire of Ritchie's widow, Gloria.Mike Hodges explained that Howard was an extra in his TV film Rumour, and the director gave him a line to say, but another extra was wrongly credited. I was annoyed by his over-detailed psychoanalysis of people he sees, based solely on their dress and facial expressions. It could easily be dumbed down for the crap he usually stars in and it would have to be better than the Sylvester Stallone version of the film. Good, but much darker than I anticipated - at least in this book, Lewis is almost like a British Jim Thompson, with nary a sympathetic character in sight, (even including the oft-abused women). The chase scene was shot in reverse, with Hodges filming Eric's death scene first because of Hendry's poor condition, Hodges being worried that he would be too out of breath to play the death scene after running. The centrepiece of Triplow’s book is, quite rightly, concerned with the novel itself, and its journey from a brutally honest and ground-breaking novel through to a partial re-imagining as one of the finest crime films ever made. Rather he presents the complexity of Lewis’s torturous mental state as he seemingly drinks himself to death.Originally from London, now living in Barton upon Humber, Nick studied English and Creative Writing at Middlesex University and, in 2007, earned a distinction on Sheffield Hallam University's MA Writing. It was written in 1970 and is actually set in Scunthorpe; my hometown, which is why I read it (the blurb is wrong, it's not Doncaster, Jack just changed trains there).

Jack confronts Kinnear, who says that he only told Paice to get the disc back from Ritchie, not kill him, and that Paice and Brumby committed the murder; Jack lets Kinnear live. Lewis is no longer regarded as the Barton lad who’d done well, ‘who wrote that film with Michael Caine.

Bloodied, Jack gets up and follows Paice to the dance floor, telling him he should finish what he starts. Anybody could if it was their own flesh and blood as was involved and they knew they weren’t going to get caught. I should have done my best a long time ago to put it back on the radar for those readers who would really appreciate the atmospheric smokestacks, flash talking hardcases, dark rust, and volcanic heat of the book that launched a genre of British hardboiled crime in the 1970s. Jack encounters another old associate, Eric Paice, who refuses to tell Jack who is employing him as a chauffeur.
