About this deal

In ATQ, Murakami perfectly captures the disorientation and delirium of living through 1995 in Japan. How, Murakami asks, can community after the quake be structured around self-reflection rather than cruelty?

Along the way we meet wise, old characters like Mr Tabata who thinks that, this life is nothing but a short, painful dream. As always with Murakami there are themes of love and loss, solitude and friendship and some of the stories include surreal moments which seem entirely believable when you are reading them. Like a turtle pulling into its shell, she slipped her right hand up inside her sleeve, and then there was a light back-scratching kind of movement. For the characters in after the quake, the Kobe earthquake is an echo from a past they buried long ago. I had so much enjoyed 1Q84 that I threww myself in this short story Murakami book with great pleasure.

Recitava Agostino d'Ippona che "vivere nel rancore è l'equivalente di bere un veleno e sperare che sia l'altro a morire". An electronics salesman who has been abruptly deserted by his wife agrees to deliver an enigmatic package--and is rewarded with a glimpse of his true nature. Haruki Murakami, the leading Japanese author, has a cult following, and all his fans have been waiting for the premiere recording of "After the Quake".One branch leads toward an act of violence, pointing subtly at Aum’s gas attack, while the other is fogged by uncertainty. Afterwards, Frog’s skin bursts and bug like creatures begins to eat Katagiri alive; he wakes up to learn that the horrifying experience is a dream.

I consider them quite a random bunch of stories that happened to be written after a natural disaster which briefly appears in the pages. In the penultimate story, “super-frog saves tokyo,” a six-foot tall frog enlists help from a collection agent named Katagiri. Vivere una vita media, silenziosa e poco stimolante non ridimensiona le piccole lotte interiori a cui bisogna far fronte ogni giorno. I quite liked “Thailand” because it had some color (music and magical spices) and no such big passivity and “Honey Pie” with a fine silent love story, emotional and cute kid and the view to the world through the fairytales. After traveling through a scrap yard and several walls, they end up at a baseball field and the man vanishes. The six stories in Haruki Murakami's mesmerizing collection are set at the time of the catastrophic 1995 Kobe earthquake, when Japan became brutally aware of the fragility of its daily existence. She leaves a note saying that living with him is like living with a "chunk of air" and that other women would be lucky to be with him down the road. Each of the stories touches on the 1995 earthquake in Kobe, although only gently- none of the stories are based there and none of them feature the earthquake as a main part of the tale.

Best of all is the story of Mr Katagiri, who comes home one evening to find a giant frog in his apartment, intent upon having the poor chap help him save all Tokyo from disaster by burrowing down into the earth and confronting an immense and angry worm. A continuum of uncertainty between what is thought to be real and what is thought to be a dream, after the quake is a magnificent to choice to puzzle oneself while reading it. However, by the end of the story they meant something to someone and they had done something "interesting" with their life. Nonetheless, the three go and when Sala sees a bear, Junpei tells her a story about how it is Tonkichi, Masakichi's friend who catches salmon. For the characters in After the Quake, the Kobe earthquake is an echo from a past they buried long ago.His eventual victory over the worm (a clear stand-in for Aum’s cult leader, Shoko Asahara) results in the disintegration of the super-frog, a willing sacrifice for millions of Tokyoites. Haruki Murakami set this collection of six short stories a month after the destructive 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan.
