Elsa's journey was heart-breaking - what she and her family went through, and what millions of people in real life went through too, was horrifying. In 1938, Max’s father gets promoted to being an SS Officer in Herr Hitler’s new Germany, and the family move to Munich.
Her books range from Early Readers to books for Young Adults and include the internationally best-selling series about half-mermaid Emily Windsnap. All three children are affected by the war, despite their differen
We are given facts about the experiences the children have, while learning about the reality of the period. But Leo and Elsa are Jewish, and as Europe falls under Hitler's sway, the three take different paths. Moa has spent his entire life on the slave plantation in horrific conditions - but a charismatic leader offers the chance to seize freedom. An amazing, immensely well-written story about the harsh realities of World War II, and brutally shows the evil side of humanity.
Her new novel, When the World Was Ours, was inspired by her father's childhood escape from the Nazis just before the second world war. As his father rises up the Nazi ranks, he suddenly finds that he is the danger his friends are trying so desperately to escape. After the photography that day, Leo’s dad goofs around on the Ferris wheel with the three young friends, causing Leo to accidentally stumble into a British couple. These provide a counterpoint to some of the truly chilling scenes in the book: the school assembly at which Jewish children are singled out; the day Max accompanies his father to work and its location is revealed; and, later, Max’s feeling that it is “his destiny” when found a job at his father’s new posting. I frequently cried while I read it, and often sobbed between readings, thinking about what took place a mere decade before I was born.Probably the best book I've read so far about those horrific times and even more heartbreaking coming from the point of view of children. Inspired by a true story, When the World Was Ours is an extraordinary novel that is as powerful as it is heartbreaking and that shows how the bonds of love, family, and friendship allow glimmers of hope to flourish, even in the most hopeless of times. Emotionally capturing the buildup to the war as compellingly as the atrocities it escalated to, this one brought me to tears. Wichtig zu erwähnen ist zu Beginn, dass die Handlung zu Zeiten des Zweiten Weltkriegs spielt und damit auch der Holocaust thematisiert wird.
Three young friends - Leo, Elsa and Max - spend a perfect day together, unaware that around them Europe is descending into a growing darkness, and that events soon mean that they will be cruelly ripped apart from each other. Das Hörbuch ist wahnsinnig einnehmend, fesselnd und tragisch und hat für mich ein weiteres Jahreshighlight beschert - wenn auch ein trauriges. It's so depressing how their lives had to be torn apart from such a young age, and seeing them grow and mature over the years. De aanloop naar en de ontwikkeling van de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de ogen van drie allerbeste vrienden uit Oostenrijk die ieder op hun eigen manier slachtoffer zijn van alles wat de fascisten bedachten.Five years later, needing a sponsor abroad to escape from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, they wrote to the address on the letter. Three young friends—Leo, Elsa, and Max—spend a perfect day together, unaware that around them big changes are coming as Europe is descending into a growing darkness and that they will soon be cruelly ripped apart from one another. All three children are affected by the war, despite their different backgrounds, and it makes hard reading, especially as you know this happened for real.
