About this deal

No discography - though I suppose this is forgivable, given the creative promiscuity of all three bands. Today we publish over 30 titles in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and science and technology.

From there it moves further back; to eye-witness accounts of early Whitehouse performaI must also point out before I go that it is FILLED with loads and loads of fantastic and rare pictures of the bands; mostly of Coil and C93 (there is a little bit more of a focus on Coil and C93 over NWW - just a little - but I feel that's because NWW have shied away from having a frontman somewhat, and also because their music is less based on literature or esoterica than the other bands - NWW is heavily discussed, dissected and chroniclized though and NWW fans will find plenty here). Strange Attractor Press have announced that a new edition of David Keenan's book England's Hidden Reverse will be published this November.

It's a tragedy reading it in hindsight of John Balance's death, since we can see the chaotic impulses and self-destructiveness in some of his behaviour and music, and we know how it all ends. They also shared interest in the occult, particularly the writings of Aleister Crowley, Austin Osman Spare and John Dee and Edward Kelly. A clear labour of love, the book was sold as a limited edition with a free CD, and quickly became the key text on these musicians and the post-industrial underground. Together, the bands represent the real English underground in all its sexual, cultural and artistic variety. EDITION*** The secret history of the UK esoteric underground—aka the biography of Coil, Current 93 and Nurse With Wound—by Wire contributor and Volcanic Tongue co-founder, David Keenan.Other familiar names pop up as well: Death In June, Sol Invictus, Fire and Ice, Nature and Organisation, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV … The book was quite a trip down memory lane for me, and I expect I’ll be re-listening to a number of CDs in the near future. Keenan has done a massive service to all fans of early industrial music in chronicling its history in such depth and detail, and Strange Attractor have brought out a truly beautiful edition, overflowing with photos and scans of gig posters and other ephemera, which really gives a strong sense of the aesthetics of the various artists. Alongside these names, it also folds Throbbing Gristle, Whitehouse, Shirley Collins, Charles Sims and AE Housman into the esoteric narrative, making for a book that has become highly influential and increasingly pertinent to a lot of music and literature produced in recent years, such as that by Grumbling Fur, English Heretic and Kemper Norton.

Based on several years' worth of exclusive interviews and unprecedented access to all three bands' personal archives, 'England's Hidden Reverse' is the first, definitive, biography of Nurse With Wound, Coil and Current 93. In a scene full of strange people on a lot of drugs, some of whom have fallen out over the years, Keenan is careful to speak to as many people who were involved as possible to get as detailed a picture as he can, and when accounts disagree will often print both. From there it moves further back; to eye-witness accounts of early Whitehouse performances; to the formation of Throbbing Gristle and the birth of industrial music; to the last moments of the visionary painter Charles Sims; to Angus MacLise, ex-of the Velvet Underground, casting his poem Year as a work of elementary magic; to Shirley Collins, AE Housman and Denton Welch’s visions of England in eternity. Long out of print and with the first edition demanding serious money from collectors, this much-anticipated expanded edition comes completely redesigned, with many new and previously unseen photographs and ephemera.

But for anyone interested in a vibrant alternative to the overwhelmingly over-produced, glossy blandness of the era (and one that is, mystifyingly, being 'rebooted' at the moment), this is an essential read. Finally reading England’s Hidden Reverse, I enjoyed it as much as I’d expected to, but there’s also an element of sadness mixed in.
