About this deal

The main characters each come from one of four Clans: ThunderClan, RiverClan, ShadowClan, and WindClan. All of these characters added something to the story, no matter how badly you wanted to hate them or love them. Sarah Crossan tells a very special story, an incredibly realistic one, and she does so in such a poetical, emotional, and meaningful way that I think I’ll take it and its characters with me for the rest of my life.

I find it interesting that there are several sub-series within the overall saga, and what appears to be a considerable timeline. Joe, Ed’s 17-year-old brother, makes the trek from New Jersey to Wakeling, Texas, where he visits his brother on death row before his execution. So, it is reasonable to speculate that Bova might have thought, let’s take the family drama of Dallas and combine it with the corporate and political drama of The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress and The Man Who Sold the Moon. I also adored the conversation between Angela and Joe, describing living with her Aunt Karen and her rules as being like being in the military.I love Sarah Crossan, but her books destroy me so I have to be in a situation where I can spend a day processing before I can read one! Money is tight for Angela as Aunt Karen has moved out and she is having to pay the full rent, meaning it will take her longer to save money to travel to Kirkland.

You totally felt the mood of Joe's 11th birthday when he describes his cake, candles and the meal they ate as the cake was only for dessert. Ed explains when he made the confession he thought he would be able to explain what actually happened later but no one wanted to listen and now he is going to die in less than a month unless a miracle happens which is unlikely which both Ed and joe know. Amusingly, despite the title/series, Moonrise is only tangentially about the Moonbase, despite a large chunk of the book taking place there.Crossan eloquently brings up themes of life and death, family, love, injustice, corruption, and the justice system in this gut-wrenching story. The story provides a sobering look at the ripple effect incarceration has on loved ones and how the justice system treats the poor. Generally speaking, fiction authors may consciously and deliberately choose to go this route because REALISTIC scenarios (real-life events) are usually not so interesting. Main characters are assumed White; same-sex marriages and gender equality at the warfront appear to be the norm in this world. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.

Living in a completely different state from the prison, it is not until Ed's execution date has been set that Joe travels up to see him. A powerful coming-of-age novel about family and discovering how to be true to yourself that is well worth reading.Joe is absolutely way out of his comfort zone which proves he would do anything he possibly can for his brother.

Grace and Tippi are 16-year-old conjoined twins attending private school after only being homeschooled. While Joe doesn’t really want to go he doesn’t really have a choice as he is one of the few people who believe that Ed is innocent and shouldn’t be in prison let alone on Death Row. The descriptions are great for example when Aunt Karen's voice is described as "as hard as the stone in an apricot".Things are complicated though as Joe learns Nell’s father is the warden of the prison which upsets things between them but they manage to work through it.
