Could The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo really be fiction, dreamt up entirely in Taylor Jenkins Reid's mind? Every moment felt so real, so tangible. When I reached the end, it was hard to let go, hard to return to a world where this was nothing more than a figment of the imagination. And perhaps my favorite part was the messaging around the importance of actual love in relationships, rather than just a willingness to try. Evelyn eventually discovers Harry and an unknown, dead passenger in a car accident outside his house. Evelyn moves the passenger, Harry's lover, into the driver's seat to protect Harry from being convicted of drunk driving. Harry eventually dies in the hospital, and Evelyn and Connor are severely impacted. Connor, in particular, begins to rebel against Evelyn, which catches media attention when she takes part in promiscuous activities. You do not know how fast you have been running, how hard you have been working, how truly exhausted you are, until someone stands behind you and says, “It’s OK, you can fall down now. I’ll catch you.”
