It was my first time reading a book by this author but it will definitely not be my last; the story, pacing, and world this author created was intricate and full of love.

i don't really know what's so good about it that i gave it three stars but i don't think it deserves two or one either. he's a thirty four year old man with kids and he doesn't know how to cook even a simple dish like pasta? That is a whole child and it was so strange to read this book and know that (1) an old man was attracted to her and (2) we are supposed to take her seriously.And despite the charred hamburgers and constant F-bombs, the girls liked being with me, and they always gave me extra long hugs when it was time for them to go back to their mom. I loved that Winnie takes charge, I like to see my heroines knowing what they want and not being afraid to go get it.

Imagine if that were a woman, how everyone would look at her like an incompetent girl, for not knowing how to do these things. So you can go right ahead and rip my clothes off and pin me down and say all kinds of filthy things to me.

Anyway, that was just one aspect that bothered me but I wanted to go into detail about it so that other people can understand my point 😭. Melanie Harlow crafts a good story, with a hilarious grand gesture gone wrong, but boy oh boy I will say it again, her male protagonists are immature assholes 80% of the time. They seem real, expressing themselves in what definitely could be their ages, and they are adorable. I’d been offered a teaching position at sniper school, and I’d considered it, but Naomi had made it clear that if I took the position, she wasn’t coming with me to Indiana—that she and our daughters would remain in Michigan where we’d grown up.
