Moving up to the Modius + Asgard 3 pile of Schiit, the 3 headphones are on a roughly equal technical level across the board and signature preference will make the determination as to which one is the favorite. Maybe the stealth black look and smartphone capable efficiency is enough to tip the balance for some. I keep a Massdrop + Sennheiser HD6XX (which is essentially a Massdrop-branded HD650) and a Beyerdynamic DT-880 600Ω around as references pieces.

They aren’t very eye-catching like some other similar models, but they look like sleek and high-end headphones.

I don’t use the crossfeed on Roon, but I use it on the Mojo 2, I set it at max (dark blue light), but I cannot hear any instruments separation difference. Comparing them to other Sennheiser headphones, I thought that for resolution they were a little more resolving than the HD 6XX, and were a significant upgrade in treble detail from the HD 58X.

The HD 650 and HD 600 have been around for almost two decades, but they continue to be a favorite amongst listeners. The metal headband does perhaps clamp the earpieces a little too firmly around the head, but we found that eased off over the month or so we spent with them. It actually has very good speed, it really is not all that far behind the DT 1990 Pro for detail in the lows. I found microdynamics to be fairly well-defined as well, as I felt like all elements in the mix had a fairly good sense of tension and presence. The significant portion of their leakage is spread between 300Hz and 20kHz, which is a very broad range. Taking the design DNA of its classic, open-backed trio of headphones – the legendary HD 580 Precision, HD 600 and HD 650 – Sennheiser is reanimating the old generation by using the latest driver technology. The HD 660S2 also comes with significantly shorter cables the the HD 660S – another indicator that Sennheiser seems self-aware of the more everyday-use reputation that the 660S has earned over the years. For the mids I do not adjust anything at all, as I think that they match preference almost perfectly.
