About this deal
The next step is adjusting the seat fore/aft position for the distance from the seat to the handlebars. To do this, you need to look at the relationship between the knee and the pedal when the pedals are level. In that position, you want the front of your kneecap to be aligned directly above the center of the pedal. In testing, we found this to be one of the smoothest rides and most comfortable bikes in terms of adjustment and ergonomics, although the seat is not quite as comfortable as their higher end models. Buying a spin bike can seem a little daunting but it needn’t be. Unlike some gym equipment, spin cycles are not the hardest thing to buy and the biggest factors should be longevity and budget – and often these two go hand in hand. In other words, the more you pay the higher quality bike you should get and therefore the longer it should last – of course, things aren’t always that simple so here are a few handy tips showing what to look out for. On a more positive note, there’s a pair of USB-A outputs at the front of the bike coupled with a water bottle holder and a wireless charging cradle for your smart devices - something the Pelton doesn’t have. Apex Bike review: performance The spin studio at any commercial gym is usually the most popular room in the building. It is also not uncommon for these classes to be fully booked which can lead to plenty of frustration if you are desperate to join the class and can’t get a space. The number one benefit to buying a spin bike to use at home is that it is yours to use whenever you please which means using it consistently is easy to do.
Like most spin bikes, there is no fancy large screen monitor and instead all of the focus has gone in to creating a bike that works incredibly well. A manual spin bike typically has a round lever, usually positioned front and centre of the bike, which allows you to adjust the levels of resistance on the bike up and down to your liking. There are third-party apps and classes on YouTube you can use for this without a connected spinning bike, while the best experience comes from bikes with partner apps such as Peloton and Echelon. Flywheel and Drive Belt– The flywheel and drive belt are key components of any spin bike and as such you should look for bikes with high quality flywheels and smooth but strong drive belts. Flywheels come in a variety of weights but it is not always the case that the heaviest flywheel is best (although this is a good rule of thumb) so always look for something that is smooth running and ideally not too loud. The same applies to the drive belt which can either be a belt or chain. Chain belts tend to be stronger but are often noisier whereas standard belts are smoother and quieter. The flywheel is 15kg which is less than some of the other models we tested but it did perform well for us. It is not quite as smooth as the JLL models but it is not noticeably jerky either. In fact, we had some very enjoyable rides on the SB500 and the level of challenge afforded by the magnetic resistance was impressive. This bike has a two way chain driven system which may explain why the ride is not quite so smooth as the belt driven systems we tested but it should also mean longevity will not be an issue with this model. The pedals seem well made and have foot straps to keep your feet in place and the pedalling action was smooth with nothing out of the ordinary. Though they get less press than their brawnier siblings, exercise bikes are often where most fitness progress is made. Unlike treadmills, rowing machines and even cross trainers, exercise bikes are an ideal way to get a sweat on at any ability level. Whether you're considering slotting an exercise bike into your home gym or just your front room, there's no telling what kind of fitness buff you are: everyone from absolute beginners to Tour De France participants can get a lot from this simple piece of equipment. However you choose to while away your time on the saddle, you'll also benefit from an LCD monitor to display your workout stats. If you’re in a smaller space and need to shift things around before and after each session you’ll also be pleased to hear it’s got built-in wheels too, making life after a brutal HIIT session a little easier. The SB700 has an impressive 22kg flywheel that powers a smooth and fluid ride. Even when used at high speeds this bike provides a smooth ride and with a dial based multi-level friction pad resistance there is more than enough to test even the most hardcore of users. It is also perfect for beginners thanks to the wide range of resistance you can choose from.
Even though most manufacturers make the stationary bike assembly process as easy as possible for users, you still can benefit from spin bike assembly tips to help you along. That’s why today we’ll be discussing the best way to assembly an indoor cycle and we’ll go through all of the steps individually. Some [spinning bikes], including Echelon, now provide so much more than just an exercise bike" Jama Oliver at Echelon told us. From live and on-demand classes to scenic rides, home exercise bikes serve up the physical benefits of exercise along with the mental health benefits of an engaging community. Yep: spin bikes are in. Riding using just the digital display feels decidedly old fashioned – think exercise bike in a tired local authority gym – but it’s pretty accurate. To enjoy anything more interactive you’ll need to connect to the Schwinn app (which essentially just saves the data from the bike, rather than offer any classes or targets), Zwift, Explore the World or Peloton. As for the tech specs – as I mentioned, you can tell that this is a top-of-the-range bike simply from how it feels. The bike itself is very heavy, which is indicative of its sturdiness, although do note that it's not easy to move or store.Spinning is generally the most sought after exercise class at any commercial gym so you might be forgiven for thinking that it has hundreds of positives and no negatives. Like anything, there is a balance to strike so let’s start with the good stuff. As I mentioned before, most spin bikes come pre-assembled to some degree. Usually, the chain, crankset, and flywheel will be already installed on the frame. That means you must focus on installing the seat, handlebars, display console, base stand, and pedals. It runs on personality – even the most reluctant of cyclists would struggle to stay demotivated when faced with Peloton’s peppy instructors who encourage you to push and pedal from an immersive touchscreen. "With Peloton, what you’re paying for is the convenience and motivation – you can squeeze in a session any time without having to go to the gym," says Lucie Cowan, Master Trainer at boutique gym Third Space. The classes on the Apex platform are courtesy of top London spin studio Boom Cycle and are nothing short of exceptional. The instructors are experienced, edgy and fun. We love how they don’t take themselves too seriously and aren’t as corny as those you’ll find on, for example, Peloton. The production feels high quality, and it can be very immersive if you’re casting on an Apple TV. It doesn’t quite have the same effect on a 9-inch iPad or tiny iPhone, though, unfortunately. The Apex is Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled and works perfectly in sync with the app. The only downside is that at the time of writing the app is only compatible with Apple iOS and so its a no-go for android users. We have it on good authority that Apex are working on an Android app though so watch this space – (edit – Android has now launched so everyone can access the brilliance of the Apex App). You can sync your data with Strava and Apple Health which is also a nice touch.
It’s worth noting that the Apex bike will only work on iOS at the moment, making the Peloton or Echelon bikes better options for Android users.
Before you buy a spin bike, it's important to first understand features are important to you as you'll pay extra for a higher-end exercise bike with all of the latest bells and whistles such as live and on-demand classes. If you have the budget, you shouldn’t need to look past the S15i, and with a hefty discount available below using our link, you can’t go far wrong with this. Finally, a 5 year frame warranty and 2 year parts and labour warranty give you plenty of peace of mind. The centre console is basic but functional and has all the standard stats displayed as you might expect including your heart rate that is measured using the pulse rate sensors on the handles. We found the readouts to be fairly accurate when compared to the readouts from our Whoop band.
In professional cycling terms, an echelon occurs when the peloton is disrupted by a crosswind. As strategies go it’s pretty blatant, so much so that Peloton Interactive Inc. is currently suing Echelon Fitness LLC for "imitating the Peloton Bike experience." But you’re not here to read about legal wrangling, you want to know whether the considerably cheaper Echelon bike is any good. Does it actually disrupt the peloton? And now for something totally wild, WaterRower’s NOHrD Bike is less a piece of workout equipment and more what one might expect to saddle up on if 1Rebel opened up a studio in the middle of the Tate Modern. Carved from solid wood (alongside a steel frame) in Germany, this is a design piece with the means to put more than just your grey cells to work.
Of course, if you want something a bit beefier then Echelon have a range of models up from the Connect Sport but when it comes to home use and value for money then you probably won’t really need much more than what this studio cycle offers. Last but not least, have someone there to help you! Assembling a spin bike, and any other exercise machine for that matter, almost always requires an extra pair of hands. So, make sure you have someone to turn to whenever you need some help and, in general, it’s good to have an assistant because it moves things along. I recommend you don’t wait until you need help; have someone there from the beginning. The centre console that comes supplied with the bike is one of the better that we saw although it is still simple by design. This is no bad thing as it keeps the cost down and allows you to easily display your own mobile device or tablet above it and use the bundled KinoMap app for live or pre-recorded training sessions and lots more besides. There is a pulse rate monitor built in to the handle bars and this can be displayed on the console but one feature that does set this apart from some of the other models is that it is compatible with standalone heart rate straps. Life Fitness are one of the out and out best fitness equipment suppliers on the market and whilst their ICG range is pretty pricey for someone needing a spin bike for home use, the IC2 is an affordable entry level option to this level of bike. What Life Fitness deem as entry level is however many echelons above what the more budget models will offer and with the IC2 you are getting an absolute top end machine at a reasonable price point. The Apex Bike is undoubtedly a good alternative to Peloton, and the lower monthly subscription cost in particular is welcome, but the Peloton experience still reigns supreme. And if you’re looking for a bargain option for home spinning there are cheaper ways to go than the Apex.
