Often referred to as ‘Christmas Whiskey’ because of the fruit sherry casks that it is kept in, its tasting notes include hints of marzipan, dried fruits and spices. You’ll learn about the history of the drink from a very energetic guide, and you’ll get to sample a number of different whiskies, which helps you get a gauge of what you like and what you don’t. There was a time when this single pot still Irish whiskey was only available from Dublin grocer Mitchell’s. The body has notes of orchard fruits, both fresh and cooked with a little vanilla cream and the finish is medium-length with spice and honey.

A good Irish whiskey for: Those looking for a tasty whiskey at a mid-range price point (its impressive bottle makes it a good gift)

Produced at the New Midleton Distillery east of Cork, Midleton Very Rare is matured for twelve to twenty years in ex-bourbon American Oak barrels and is one of the most expensive whiskeys regularly produced by Irish Distillers. Domestic sales also performed positively, with year-on-year growth of 44% generated. Both brands were listed in Tesco supermarkets for the first time, while sales at both Dunnes Stores and SuperValu grew by over 50%. Further new listings were secured with the Carryout Off Licence Group, bringing Dubliner Whiskey & Honeycomb Liqueur directly to Irish consumers for the first time. The Boyne Valley’s clear water and lush soil provide a fine base for Slane’s triple casked whiskey.

With water sourced from the River Bush and named after the mills that made the Barley, Bushmills is an Irish whiskey icon. Named after historic Knappogue Castle ( built in 1467) in County Clare, Knappogue Castle Irish Whiskey is a brand of premium single malt Irish whiskey. OVERALL: Sugary sweet! Forget the wedge of cake after dinner and go with this Irish Whiskey Liqueur. A big taste of vanilla cream cheese icing with a hint of honey and some irish whiskey coming through. Less calories and a little buzz. If you are a fan of after dinner liqueurs, I would definitely put this on your list. It's great neat, chilled or with a cube. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. The one thing that this Dublin whiskey tour confirmed for me is that you’d have to beat me to get me to take a sip of peaty whiskey ever again.

Whisky reviews for The Dubliner Irish Whiskey

Darryl McNally, Master Distiller for The Dubliner, comments; “With The Dubliner Master Distiller’s Reserve, I set out to create a whiskey that showcased the unique characteristics of the individual whiskies, blending them together in a way that ensured the end product was still true to the style of The Dubliner range. My take on Irish whiskey has always been staying true to tradition, but with a bit of a twist, which I believe we have achieved with The Dubliner Master Distiller’s Reserve. I’m very proud of the final product and I’m confident it will help to bring yet more consumers into the Irish Whiskey category.” However, the one that I find myself returning to is their single pot still, which is matured in bourbon barrels (see Irish whiskey vs Bourbon) before being further matured in Spanish sherry casks.

I’ve no doubt that we’ve unintentionally left out some top Irish whiskey brands from the guide above. So, booking a tour is usually fairly straightforward, but I can’t begin to tell you the amount of times we’ve heard of someone booking onto one of the Dublin whiskey tours, only to be disappointed. The best Irish whiskey for: Both first time sippers and experienced palates will appreciate Redbreast 12 Situated inside the imposing former Guinness Power House in Dublin’s Liberties district, Roe & Co. is named after legendary 19th-century whiskey pioneer George Roe and only began distilling in 2017. A showstopper thanks to the effortless complexity that comes with age. Tropical fruit, spice, honey and vanilla, alongside a silky texture that lasts and lasts. Expensive? Yes. A great whiskey? Also yes. Alcohol 46.2%Each and every Member must be of legal drinking age in its country of residence to be allowed to use the Service. One of the unique things about this lesser-spotted drop is that each bottle is individually numbered and signed by the Master Distiller, and sold in an accompanying wooden display case. One of the things I like most about Paddy is that it has a taste that is fairly inoffensive to novice whiskey sippers, which makes it a go-to for any occasion that warrants a bring-a-bottle-buzz. Whether old names or new, Irish whiskey makers today are linked by a drive to experiment and push the limits of flavour exploration – from the youthful releases of the latest startup to long-aged expressions such as those from Bushmills’ Causeway Collection, which head blender Alex Thomas says took more than 15 years to perfect. ‘We’re proud to run the full flavour gamut and experiment with all sorts of [cask] finishes, from Port and Madeira to rum and wine,’ she adds. ‘There is an Irish whiskey for everyone and every occasion, which is what makes it such an exciting category.’
