One thing that comes as a particular surprise for a game that thrives off having lots of cards working in opposition to each other is that it works well as both a solo board game and a two-player board game. The colored reputation disks are randomly placed on the reputation track and players take the doubloons listed below their reputation marker.

Libertalia is a game about making as much booty (yes, I mean treasure) as you can in classic ‘Golden age of Piracy’ fashion. However, if you happen to make a couple of really bad plays early on, it feels nearly impossible to catch back up. Now his tastes lean more toward midweight and above euros, but he often mixes in family-weight games to cleanse his palate.

It’s a streamlined, smooth experience, which means that you can be all done inside an hour, even with five or six players. This also extends to the reputation track, which adds a layer of positioning that was absent from the original Libertalia. We also do not accept products that are intimate or sanitary goods, hazardous materials, or flammable liquids or gases. With the added spice of varying degrees of take that everyone at the table is invested with a good level of player interaction. I can see that we could have been clearer by noting directly in the component list which card number isn’t there.

Libertalia: Winds of Galecrest is a completely revised, expanded, and refreshed edition of the classic pirate game. However, I have a strong affinity for brightly colored board games, and Libertalia certainly delivers on that front. The fact that it provides a satisfying voyage of strategy alongside all of that is nothing short of a brilliant newly christened ship ready to set sail.

As for the actual quality of the components, it is consistently high throughout which should come as no surprise considering that Stonemaier Games is publishing the game.

The all play mechanic ensures there is very little down time and days and journeys pass like ships in the night.

If players have to discard one of their characters, they’re placed face down on their graveyard tile. At the end of a voyage, anchor abilities are also simultaneously activated by loot tokens and characters on your ship.
