Eventually, Brendan tried something new, a low-carb, high-fat approach and was surprised to find how quickly he lost weight and began to feel better. Photo by Lacey Raper on Unsplash It was a Saturday afternoon, and I was on my way home from a trip into town when I found myself waiting to turn at a set of traffic lights. These recommendations reflected the emerging wisdom of the time, that fat — particularly saturated fat, through its effects on cholesterol levels — was a primary contributor to heart disease. I was eating a lot, but it was just the carbs that I got rid of for starters, and it was then just over a very gradual period of several months that the hunger eventually just started to take care of itself, and it felt great. And not realising that hunger is, you know proper physiological hunger is your body's way of telling you, you need fuel. The author followed its standard diet advice, but was still hungry, still overweight, and feeling its health consequences. So it's all of these things, the fruits, the vegetables, the grains, that I've been taught to eat since childhood. So Brendan, I think what your story offers for people is a story of inspiration and of hope, and if they wanted to get their hands on your book, how do they do that? If you’re on the fence about how fix your struggle with obesity, if you need some inspiration for the journey you’re already on, or if you’d simply like to celebrate success with a friend in the LCHF (or other low-carb) community, this is the One Book. And none of these things are true at all but it's such an easy assumption to make, because that knowledge that we understand about what it is to do weight is just so commonplace. Reading the first half of the book will make you see and analyse what may be the possible reasons of us not being able to control weight gain.

The first nine chapters describe his life as a persecuted fat kid and then as a hopelessly fat “nerd” adult. And at that point, that's where the argument broke down in my mind right away, because the idea of, “Well, if you're eating less then your body's just going to start burning the fat that you're already carrying”. And that was, was such a key question in the early stages of my life's journey that it's, it's actually the tagline on the back of the book. He possibly believed that he might already have been doing his best to stay healthy, and felt dejected at the prospect that what he was doing was simply not good enough, that he himself was simply not good enough. The Fat Ginger Nerd is an inspiring personal story, woven with practical weight loss help and some startling insights into how we ended up with this public health crisis. It's not so much necessarily that just eating less is wrong, but when you, when that's all you say, that's all that people take on board with that idea. Well, are multiple steaks and multiple chicken breasts for starters those first few months, really anybody's idea of eating less?

I'm only two of them now and give it a few more years, give it a few more years, I'll probably be down to just the one.

And in the meantime, many experts continue to claim that the science has long since been settled on these matters; the case closed, the door locked and the key thrown away. He decided to join a gym, where to his surprise the personal trainer he saw prescribed him a low carb diet.

Inform your doctor of any changes you may make to your lifestyle and discuss these with your doctor. The coverage has continued to keep this piece of New Zealand history alive and meant a lot to the families of those connected to this tragic event. This would also not be the first field into which I have invested my time without being overly qualified to do so.It’s just something I could never bring myself to enjoy in the past, and so perhaps more out of habit than anything else, it’s something I still don’t do very often now.
