About this deal

All of the components of a compulsive psychological thriller present—from the overly idyllic family setting, to the budding young psychopath, missing boyfriend and potential stalker—combined with a dual timeline structure that begs the reader to connect the dots, makes for a promising story. Compound those things with the fact that I enjoyed Camilla Way’s debut, and I guess you could say, I fell victim to the possibility.

The Lies We Told by Camilla Way | Goodreads

After a devastating hurricane hits the coast of North Carolina, Rebecca and Adam urge Maya to join them in the relief effort. To please her husband, Maya finally agrees. She loses herself in the care and transport of victims, but when her helicopter crashes into raging floodwaters, there appears to be no survivors. While Way’s sophomore offering was nowhere close to earning favorite status from me, it’s not one I would consider horrible either—more of a middle-of-the-road read, I guess? Keep your bullshit meter handy though, you're gonna need it with this cast; they’re quite deceitful. Tense, unsettling, and keeps you guessing till the very end. We Need to Talk About Kevin meets Other People’s Children.“—Cara Hunter, author of Close to Home

Great, My." I could hear the grin in his voice. "Let's stay up late tonight and talk until dawn, okay?" I really enjoyed this author’s previous novel " Watching Edie” so I had high hopes for this novel. I’m happy to say that I really enjoyed it. Maya and Rebecca Ward are both accomplished physicians, but that’s where the sisters’ similarities end. As teenagers, they witnessed their parents’ murder, but it was Rebecca who saved Maya from becoming another of the gunman’s victims. The tragedy left Maya cautious and timid, settling for a sedate medical practice with her husband, Adam, while Rebecca became the risk taker. The first is the emotional anguish. Luke’s disappearance affects all those who knew him. Even after his dirty secrets are aired and his flaws are exposed, there is a part of the reader that still hopes he is okay, mainly because of the pain of those suffering due to his disappearance. Also, the way the author manages to keep the big reveal under wraps for three quarters of the narrative—not to mention the fact that the novel doesn’t end right after the big reveal—says a lot about the amount of time and attention to detail that went into creating the plot. I don’t want to say too much and give away any spoilers. Suffice it to say the book is very topical and of the moment.

THE LIES WE TOLD by Diane Chamberlain | Goodreads

A] tale of twisted narratives fueled by obsession…[a] tense psychological thriller.”— Washington Times The Lies We Told ultimately left me with a promise that even though things happen with in the confines of your life, that define who you are – you do not always have to be defined only by them, the things that happen with in our lives do help to make us who we are, but it's up to us to push past those confines and break free!

I loved the two timelines, I think it made it even more exciting, especially when the past and the present met. I read Camilla Ways, Watching Edie, and enjoyed it very much so I was thrilled to get my hands on a copy of this one and it did not disappoint. While I suspected some of what was happening I will say that the very last twist really dropped my jaw..I hadn't expected that at all and isn't that why we're all so addicted to these psych thrillers? Yes, yes it is! The author’s stern view also has something of the morality play. Her characters have choices, but she shows them rejecting their good angels in favor of the blandishments of their bad angels. My mother yanked the passenger door open and I braced myself for what she would say. She jumped into the car. "Drive!" she screamed, pulling the door shut. "In reverse! Hurry!" I could smell the rain on her. I could smell fear. One element that walks a fine line between being superb and being the only thing that bogs down the narrative is the attention to detail. When it comes to emotional grit and conveying the desperation of Luke’s family as well as Clara, Way shines:

The Lies We Tell: A tense psychological thriller that will The Lies We Tell: A tense psychological thriller that will

BAM! Finally a thriller that hit me right in the face, making me incredible happy to be pummeled by surprise after surprise. The POVs were absolutely perfect. In the beginning you had no idea who the mother was, and that made you pay very close attention to everything that was revealed. It wasn’t just that, though. The sociopathic child really made the hairs standing up on end. I felt chilled and unsettled and it was absolutely delicious. I needed to know where it all would end, and how the author would tie the different threads together. And boy, she delivered with an unique, believable and satisfying solution. The characters were also very well crafted. They felt like real, complex people. And the ending (after we knew all the secrets) left me wanting more!A] twisty psychological thriller….Think you have the plot figured out? Think again. There are no easy answers in Way’s dark, compelling story. Grade: A”— The Cleveland Plain Dealer But maybe there is more going on than Clara realized. As she digs deeper, Clara realizes there may be more secrets in Luke’s past than she realized. Is it possible Luke disappeared of his own accord? Or did something more sinister happen? Most of the book was good and entertaining. But the ending did not do it for me at all. It was all just way too convenient. Talk about tying it all up with a nice pink bow! In the past timeline Beth is a young mother that is at her wit’s end when it comes to dealing with her young daughter Hannah. Hannah is definitely nothing like other children and Beth lives in fear of just what her daughter will do next.

Book Review: The Lies We Told by Camilla Way | THE COZIE

So how are Clara and Beth’s stories connected? This book had my mind spinning, I had so many theories going on, most of them pretty convoluted... this was a group read with my book Besties and we were all scratching our heads trying to figure this one out... and as Camilla Way began to weave these stories together the fog began to lift and it became crystal clear.... Crystal clear that this was one Hot mess! So many lies leading to so many secrets, and so many secrets leading to so many lies.... Clara is dating Luke, and he vanishes. Most everyone believes he has just walked out on her, but Clara thinks otherwise. The small clues he left behind point to a possible stalker. Our story begins with Beth and Doug praying for a child since the very early years of their marriage. They've been left with too many unsuccessful attempts. But the winds of time finally bring them baby Hannah. Their little miracle child showers them with joy beyond words. As Hannah matures, Beth eventually notices worrisome behavior in little Hannah. She's taken on aggressive displays both at home and at school. Doug is in denial, but Beth observes unsettling, willful acts by her daughter. As Hannah grows, so do the escalating problems. My breath caught in my throat and I let out a soft moan. She knows, I thought. She knows where we've been. Emma, Luke’s older sister, who also vanished, but twenty years earlier, is now present and attempting to help Clara find Luke. She won’t tell anyone where she’s been or even what happened. Another tragedy years later in which they are once again connected brings about changes in both of them, and makes them face up to the past and what their roles were and are. They and the reader find out which sister is really the strong one, and finds that perhaps they are more alike than they think. I've never read any of Way's books before, but she definitely knows how to ration out the suspense to keep you hooked and debating whether to devour the entire book at once or savor it slowly. (I went with the former approach—nearly finished the whole thing in a day!) She's a great writer, although I felt like the book took a little longer to wrap up than I wanted. But The Lies We Told is definitely going to be one of those thrillers you see everywhere as soon as it's published October 9!
