About this deal

Listen to a favourite radio station or have a productivity playlist. You can also try brown noise apps – it’s like white noise but is meant to help you concentrate. There is no perfect English translation for the word hygge as it is a state of mind which can encompass many feelings and descriptive words. Comfort, joy, peace, happiness, togetherness and love are just to name a few. Hygge originated from a Norwegian word but it is described in the Collins English Dictionary as "A concept, originating in Denmark, of creating cosy and convivial atmospheres that promote wellbeing." Though tough to explain (and even tougher to pronounce), hygge is earning a lot of attention lately. Make space in every weekend for quality family time together. (Sounds obvious, but often easier said than done with busy schedules). A great read, the little book of hygge is all about learning how to live well. You’ll discover what it means to be involved in the moment and make the most of the little things. Meik also discusses things like how to build relationships and spend the right amount of time with your tribe.

Hygge often involves disconnecting from the digital world and embracing face-to-face interactions and analog activities, such as board games, reading physical books, or crafting. If you’re looking for the perfect game for adults for game night, start by considering what everyone’s interests are. Many games for adults involve complex strategy and require you to think a few moves ahead. If the people you’re playing with love figuring out complex problems, then a strategy game may be a good choice. Other people prefer hilarious conversations and unique topics. Some adult games provide great punchlines that let laughter flow. If your friends and family prefer conversation-based games, then this is a good option. Take a flask of hot chocolate with you on a long walk. Try this lightweight Thermos which won’t weight you down. Build a collection of hot drinks to choose from to suit any mood. Flavoured teas, coffees and hot chocolates are bound to add a little bit of cheer into your day. There are three fragrances included, including HYGGE for strawberry and rose petals, KOTO for amber and jasmine, and RO for fresh grass and crumpled leaves.

Create traditions for celebrating birthdays and special events. These things give a lovely rhythm to your life and give you things to look forward to. Kids also love them! I believe there is no self-development without self-love. I think hygge is a kind of self-care activity that is essential to your overall well-being. It doesn’t matter if you are a Dane or American Or Indian, you can bring hygge to your lives. I am sure we all have experienced hyggeligt (meaning hygge-like) moments in life without knowing hygge. Make a playlist of songs from your favourite decade and blast it out loud. (If you have an Echo device, Alexa will happily oblige by playing you songs from a specific year.) There is no actual recipe for hygge as it can include one ingredient, or several ingredients mixed together. An example would be to mix 500g of comfort, 500g of indulgence and 500g of company together in one bowl. Add to this a cup of relaxation, then garnish with a sprinkling of togetherness. You don’t have to travel to Denmark and snuggle up in the cold weather at winter to discover the value of hygge. Spending more candlelit moments in your home could be enough to take your happiness to the next level.

Head to the coast. Feel the sand between your toes and soak up the feelgood negative ions. The beach isn’t just for summer. Here in Scotland we go to the beach year-round. The big skies and crisp light are really beneficial during the short winter days. Hygge is personal and can be interpreted differently by individuals. What brings a sense of hygge to one person might be different for another. It’s about discovering what makes you feel content and peaceful. If you ask me, spending time alone with a book is one of the best hyggeligt experiences. Books can transport you to another world without taking a step from where you are. It lets your imagination run wild and can take away your worries for a brief time. Most games require two to four players, while some can be played individually or with a larger group. Consider how many people you expect to play with most often, and get a game that accommodates those needs. Keep in mind that some games work better with a larger group, even though they can still be played with just two or three people. Conversely, some games are more fun with a tight-knit group of friends rather than a large crowd.

Summer Hygge

Hot drinks have a non-negotiable hygge factor in them. Drinks like tea, coffee, hot chocolate are a must for hygge. Especially, in the cold months, the warmth provided by a hot drink is a bonus. Take notice of the seasons and how they change. Enjoy and appreciate the differences of each one. This is mostly a mindfulness tip, but that’s an important element of hygge. Danes are particular about the lighting and the interior design of their homes. Bright lights are not hyggeligt and dimmer the light the better. Most Danes associate candles with hygge. Many of them light candles almost every day and the candle consumption goes higher during winter.

Make your workspace a more pleasant place to sit: declutter and clean, add a plant and some photos of loved one and/or places you love. I promise it will make a difference. If you are an introvert, it might feel intimidating to invite people to your home for a gathering. But don’t worry, “hygge is for introverts too”, says Wiking. Reading is a naturally hygge activity, but make it even more so with books such as The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking. I also have his new book, My Hygge Home, on my wishlist! If you sometimes involve older children and teenagers in your game nights, consider whether the game is appropriate for their age. While many games are based on themes and topics that are friendly for all ages, some games have sensitive or adult topics that may not be suitable for children. Treat yourself to a stay-in-bed-day or pyjama day one weekend and feel no guilt. You have my permission. (If you have kids, they will also love this.)Start each day by taking 2 minutes to remind yourself of the good things in your life. The feeling of hygge is closely linked with contentment & gratitude, so help yourself to feel it.
