About this deal

This book is more for general interest, but has lots of good information on different permaculture techniques, how mushrooms can help with environmental issues, and different ways you can experiment with mushrooms at home. The National Audubon Society Field Guide To Mushrooms is great for foraging, because it is relatively small and you can easily fit it in your backpack and take it with you into the woods. The detailed, desk-reference-ness of the book is undeniable and especially valuable since it is written clearly and not in scientific myco-lese terminology. General field guides are the usual starting point for most amateurs just starting out in mycology (the proper term for the study of fungi) but there is an obvious problem here: the number of species included.

That being said, it’s still worth giving it a try even if you’re not that experienced, as this book will get you there in no time. The Complete Mushroom Hunter is a great resource for beginners, and is very easy to read even if you know nothing about mushrooms. How to change your mind is a groundbreaking look at the new science of psychedelics, and the potential that these substances have for mental health, anxiety, depression and much more.It does get slightly mixed reviews because it doesn’t include notes on edibility, which is upsetting for the forager who only wants to know edible species. If you're entranced by the enigmatic allure of the forest, intrigued by the diverse array of shapes and colours that fungi grace our landscapes with, and eager to embark on the gratifying journey of mushroom hunting, you've discovered your haven.

Always keep aside a specimen of anything you collect to eat and if it is a species you have not eaten before then sample just a little—even good edibles can cause upsets in some people (many people can’t eat strawberries or nuts for example).

If you're captivated by the mysteries of the forest, lured by the diverse shapes and colours that fungi bestow upon our natural landscapes, and eager to indulge your culinary curiosity, you've arrived at the perfect destination.

This handbook is designed to be simple to use and follow, so it’s crammed full of helpful features, such as a fungi calendar, identification tables and both photos and illustrations. Behind this comprehensive guide is Stefan Buczacki, one of the top mycologists and horticultural scientists in Europe. Complete with an introduction exploring the life cycle and evolution of fungi, this foraging guide is not only a great reference book for identifying mushrooms, but also an interesting resource. It focuses on the information you need to collect fungi safely, including notes on the appearance, location and seasonality of different varieties. If you’re in the Gulf Coast states, it’s a worthy guide to all the mushrooms, not just edible species. The Essential Guide to Rocky Mountain Mushrooms by Habitat by Cathy Cripps, Vera Evenson, and Michael Kuo is a stunning and accessible guide to the region. That is the down side of this book, there is no key to identification so you need a rough idea where you’re starting or you may just end up thumbing through hundreds of pages until you stumble upon a genus that looks similar and work backwards.
