The National Audubon Society Field Guide To Mushrooms is great for foraging, because it is relatively small and you can easily fit it in your backpack and take it with you into the woods. The detailed, desk-reference-ness of the book is undeniable and especially valuable since it is written clearly and not in scientific myco-lese terminology. General field guides are the usual starting point for most amateurs just starting out in mycology (the proper term for the study of fungi) but there is an obvious problem here: the number of species included.

That being said, it’s still worth giving it a try even if you’re not that experienced, as this book will get you there in no time. The Complete Mushroom Hunter is a great resource for beginners, and is very easy to read even if you know nothing about mushrooms.
