About this deal

In more recent years (and I’ve heard this said myself by Argentine veterans) it transpires that many of the interviews felt a bit restricted and forced and that there was a definite sense of ‘get it right’ from the Argentine military to their still-serving veterans who were not allowed much lateral space to vent their full thoughts. When the Argentinian author Carlos Gamerro adapted his fantastical, surreal, funny, bizarre novel about the Falkland Islands into a stage play for Buenos Aires' Teatro Alvear, the reception was noisy.

My first book is the result of journalistic good luck: of being in the right place at the right time. After the war, and through to 1984, he pieced them together again and created one of the most compelling first-hand narratives of the Falklands War by those who were there throughout the invasion, occupation and liberation with everything from the weather to the scraps of news of the task force, the hopes of liberation, the local gossip and the Argentine propaganda as well as a detailed insight into life under military occupation. Her role for most of the time was that of an expendable escort and she became the only ship to survive an Exocet hit. In early 1982, the UK despatched a Task Force to the South Atlantic to recover the Falkland Islands from occupation by Argentina.

I usually read first person accounts of war, but this skillfully combines first person with battle history for a more balanced and complete story. On 1 April 1982 the Argentinian junta invaded the Falkland Islands, while the 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment was on leave. Bramley followed up this most famous of books in 2009 with his follow-on “Two sides of Hell” which involved contributions from veterans of both sides of the conflict, but which was eternally overshadowed by his original book. This text tells the story of the frigate Ardent, from Christmas 1981 in Amsterdam to her sinking in Falkland Sound - and beyond. Anyone with an interest in the Falklands should read it as it really sets the story straight, and shows us yet again the bravery and sacrifice shown during the conflict. D Company played the decisive role, but, in the closing moments, suffered a deadly artillery barrage – from their own guns. The first of his SAS operations that Curtis details took place in Iraq where he spent several weeks behind enemy lines. Following on from Nick's book My Friends the Enemy this new book seeks to show in a pictorial way the Falklands War in a new and absorbing way.
