By the 1920s, skirts had shortened to the knee, the body shape to aspire to was boy-like with no curves and fabric had become sheerer so lingerie styles progressed accordingly which is where our ‘French Knickers’ style comes in, alongside Camiknickers which combined the bodice and knickers into one garment. Christian Dior's famous 'New Look' required the sort of structured underpinnings that hadn't been seen since The Edwardian Era. Slips have more or less fallen out of fashion, but they used to be a vital part of every woman's wardrobe. Look at all those women enjoying those big, sexy knickers, and I know exactly what they are really thinking, even if each of them would ‘deny everything’ if there was a man within a mile!

In my village, Mrs B did our laundry, apart from our intimate underwear, and she was always undressed to her knickers whenever I went to collect or deliver our washing. The company became infamous for popularizing black lingerie and "sexy" lingerie as well as sending catalogs to homes all across America. By the 1930s there was a vogue for bias-cut clothes and material cut like this tended to elongate the figure and lingerie became slinkier and more figure-hugging. If you only have time to watch one scene right now though, make it the striptease with both Bettie Page and Tempest Storm, starting around the 6:00 minute mark. Towards the end, around the 2:00 minute mark, the old style bloomers and nightgown are tossed for more modern intimate apparel.This young woman is clearly posing for the camera as her knickers are briefer than most of us liked to wear in reality, but in most other ways she is typical of my day. I also discovered a while ago that undies of this style are generally referred to as “Tap Pants” in the States; when I first spotted this term in a vintage Facebook group (and believe me, people in vintage Facebook groups know their stuff!
