This book is like an early spring, colourful, light and joyous. Adam Stower has done a marvellous job on the illustrations which bring my story to life. It tells the tale of a baby panda named Marmalade who thinks like he doesn’t fit because his fur is orange. Marmalade goes on an epic journey through the forest meeting all the weird and wonderful creatures along the way to find out where he belongs.” I stand by my previous note about the language for a younger child but don't let that put you off. Children need to learn all levels of language and they may not understand now but just hearing the words and seeing the pictures is enough for this very young age. There is a new panda born but, even though his mom thinks he’s perfect, he soon runs away after he is shunned by the other panda bears because he doesn’t look like them. His adventure sees him meeting some interesting animals in the forest, each a little confused as to why this panda is orange. The collective noun for a group of pandas is an ‘embarrassment’. Can you find out the collective nouns for other animals? Make a poster to show some of these. Setting aside the fact that pandas are solitary animals and that the creatures Marmalade meets would not be found anywhere near his natural home, this is a story about family love, being yourself and finding your place in the world – a message our youngest readers need to hear often as they begin to develop their own identity and be comfortable with it. And while they would have or will hear the theme in many stories, it is the ending that makes this one different. For it doesn’t come to a cosy conclusion with Marmalade snuggling in close to his Mama again – they get up to some hilarious mischief that lightens the message and leaves the reader with a smile. It's a lovely message for children and the pictures are wonderful. The design of the book is as you would expect beautiful. Retell part of the story from the point of view of Marmalade’s mother (or the Elder Panda). Can you explain how they feel about the arrival of the little panda? The story about finding your place in the world is brought to life through wonderfully bright and colorful illustrations by Adam Stower. I always enjoy picture books with messages and this one of being yourself and celebrating family love is an important one to share with our children.
