About this deal

South Devon Chilli Farm are chilli experts, whose freshly grown chilli crops are used to make their delicious and award-winning range of products, from sauces to chocolate. We use Kashmiri chilli paste in our Kashmiri and Ma's Paretal curry packs, which is what gives them their intense red colour. These 'Kashmiri Red Chillies' will impart a wonderful deep red colour into your Indian/Thai/Oriental without adding too much heat.

It can also be blended in equal proportion with a spicier red chilli powder if you want both colour and hotness. We recommend that you do not rely solely on the information presented here and that you always read labels, warnings, and directions before using or consuming a product. We will start selling chillies again in August/September 2023 (the exact time for each variety depends on the crops). Traditionally these whole dried chillies are soaked in water then ground into a paste before adding to a dish, as this method intensifies even further their colour. They have very little in the way of heat, though, measuring just 1500 SHU, which is less than a jalapeno pepper.Content on this site is not intended to substitute for advice given by medical practitioner, pharmacist, or other licensed health-care professional. Soak in hot water and puree, or finely chop or grind with other spices to make an authentic curry paste. Available in a wide range of colour values, the best varieties are bright red and valued for their high colour retention. They can also be fried quickly in a little oil before use, which gives them a slightly more smoky nature, and used like this they are commonly added to dahl and pulses as a finishing garnish before serving – the hot, chilli-infused oil lifts the dish wonderfully with its colour and flavour.

The plants are sent through the post by first class mail in see-through packaging so the postman knows they need to be handled carefully. They give a glowing red colour to dishes without imparting too much heat and make the dish more appealing and palatable. Please always read the labels, warnings, and directions provided with the product before using or consuming a product. It is also very useful just for adding warmth and colour to anything else, particularly dishes based on tomatoes – try adding a little to a homemade tomato soup, turning it into the perfect Winter warmer!According to the Spices Board of India, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, Kashmiri Chillies are mainly grown in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, but also in places such as Goa. Kashmiri Red Chilies or Kashmiri Laal Mirch are characterized by their ability to give a dark red colour to food, capable of colouring and adding flavour, while at the same time not allowing the food to become too pungent or spicy. The heat from chillies is a subjective thing we find; what some may find too hot, others might find tame. Therefore, you should go easy on chillies, chilli powders and blends with chilli powders in them to find the heat level you like.

Deep red, wrinkled whole Kashmiri chillies are famed for their stunning colouring properties as much as their delicious flavour. The Kashmiri chilli adds a vibrant red colour when used to make curry pastes - it is this colour that poorer-quality restaurants try to recreate with red food colouring!
