About this deal

She adored Sun throughout her life, but Chang hinted in her book that Red Sister's love and admiration evaporated when she realised that Sun made use of her when he was escaping his enemies in Canton, risking her life for his ambition. They made their country fit their ideals and appetites (Big Sister and Red Sister, in particular) so much so that I found myself asking—if the Soong sisters had not met men like Sun or Chiang, would they still have been together? Sun created his own bank for China but under his name, and listed all its assets in his papers under ‘family affairs’. These include letters from lovers, teachers and acquaintances, and reminiscences of fellow-students.

Ailing was not interested and went on to marry a businessman, HH Kung; the couple would accumulate one of the greatest personal fortunes of 20th-century China. If you were a child growing up in 1980s China, as I was, Chinese Communist Party education began as soon as you could spell your name. By turns intimate and epic, Jung Chang reveals the lives of three extraordinary women who helped shape twentieth-century China. I get that this is supposed to be a review for Jung Chang's book, but given the content (and context) I feel that a comparison between the two books are necessary.Born between 1888 and 1898, the twilight of imperial China, all three went on to play dominant roles in 20th-century Chinese life, on the extremes of the political spectrum. Some of the data that are collected include the number of visitors, their source, and the pages they visit anonymously.

The Soong sisters were an extraordinary trio … Jung Chang has shown, in books such as Wild Swans , her instinct for a compelling story , and that instinct stands her in good stead here as she weaves her way through the complex history of China from the 1880s to the 1970s… Well worth reading, in particular for the way it shows how powerful women have helped to shape modern China.

While the book is fairly positive on this family you see the Soong's and Kung’s helping themselves to public funds.

Red Sister, Ching-ling, married the 'Father of China', Sun Yat-sen, and rose to be Mao's vice-chair. The title clearly emphasizes on the sisters but we were given a whole lot introduction to the men: Sun Yat Sen and Chiang Kai Shek. Her value to her husband’s regime shone particularly through the grim years of the second world war. This led to at least one near-death experience, when Qingling was trapped in a military attack by one of Sun’s rivals.View image in fullscreen From left: Madame Chiang Kai-shek – Meiling – with her sisters Ailing and Qingling in 1942 in Chungking. Out of her own pocket, she had converted the Lido Cabaret into a field hospital of 300 beds and set up a children’s hospital with a hundred beds. Na nieszczęście Charliego wśród ubiegających się o rękę jednej z córek znalazł się największy rewolucjonista kraju. The combination of historical events, biographical elements and story telling makes it interesting to read and brings us closer to certain names or events. You see May-ling is only concerned about who will run Taiwan after Chaing’s death because she wanted to keep her large staff (in New York City).

Hidup dikejar-kejar "musuh" suami mereka di zaman Warlord ini (dlm kasus ini, Ching Ling dan May Ling) membuat mereka keguguran dan tidak bisa memiliki anak. All three sisters enjoyed tremendous privilege and glory, but also endured constant attacks and mortal danger. With the start of the Nationalist-Communist civil war, however, the sisters were permanently separated. He dealt with Triads (Chinese mafia), Germans during WW1 (official China supported Entente and sent laborers) and Soviets. In Chang’s account, Qingling is the least appealing: a hard-headed Comintern convert, whose political convictions overrode feelings for her family.
