About this deal

My advice, heed the advice of Mike Cecchini of MRC Engineering (below) and the very generous advice of webBikeWorld. He is dead on and webBikeWorld was very generous to TecMate. The red wire should be connected to the positive terminal. If you copy and paste the link below you can view the instructions. The only thing the Sears/Schumacher charger doesn’t have (which all chargers should) is an 8V to 20V meter to display the only other piece of valuable information I’d like to know when I connect it to a battery.

I just wish I could tell you that paying the extra money for one is worth it, but it’s beyond my abilities to tell.As a computer consultant, I see this a lot in residential situations here in Florida — after 15 – 30 years of duty, the 12′ of copper grounding rod that the electrical system ties to is so corroded that it no longer does a good job of conducting the ground-to-earth connection (or the grounding strap itself where it connects to the ground-rod).

I just have this feeling that there really aren’t any distinguishing characteristics that make one all that different from the other — beside the fancy cases and LED lights, that is. in rod segments and a sledgehammer (to drive in a new one), plus a bit of sanding on the grounding strap & some dielectric grease, and the problem is normally resolved for another decade-plus. SAVE : Low Volt Start of 0.5V + 2-step* desulphation recovery (*1-step low volt pulse save during CAN-bus mode).SAVE : Low Volt Start of 0.5V + 2-step* desulphation recovery (*1-step low volt pulse save during CAN-bus mode). The Optimate 4 has several microprocessor controlled stages that analyze, desulfate and charge motorcycle and automobile batteries. If it’s not connected to a battery with more than 2 volts, a solid green power light comes on, but otherwise no current flows as a safety feature. If, for example, unconnected crocodile clips are being used, touching them together produces no spark.

A) Condensation in the area you are keeping the battery chargers in. This is particularly problematic in areas that have very high humidity levels, and he may want to consider a water-proof alternative instead of a vented-cased charger; All the unique features found in each of the OptiMate battery saving charger-tester-maintainers are the most advanced in the world today, guaranteeing any vehicle or craft owner dependent on a 12V battery the ultimate in unsupervised long term battery care. Is it advisable to leave the charger plugged into the bike and switched on for days and weeks . Can any harm come to the bike or charger, many thanks. March 19, 2018 I’m guessing it’s the combination of the green light #1 in the upper left-hand corner and the green light #5 in the upper right-hand corner, because those are the only lights still glowing after all the other lights have gone off. You’d sort of think they’d tell you that in the manual, but I can’t find it.

The Optimate 4 does have a lot of nice features, and it is nice to have all the lights to let you know what’s happening, as long as you have the manual nearby to interpret them. CAN-bus program: the KEYLESS activation program guarantees automatic re-opening of the connection even with the ignition turned off. 12. The alternating test and charge maintenance program is designed to provide the recommend maintenance voltage for AGM / GEL batteries whilst reducing the average voltage as required by STD filler cap batteries, making it ideal for indefinite and 100% safe long term maintenance charging of any type of 12V lead-acid battery. Technical Specifications With the flexible microprocessor controlled DUAL Program, OptiMate 4 can diagnose, recover, charge, test and maintain your battery directly, or select the 2nd program to charge via the 12V port on motorcycles fitted with CAN-bus. So I leave you with mixed feelings on the Optimate 4. There’s nothing at all wrong with it, it seems very well made and solid and I like the quality of the hardware and connectors it is supplied with.

In either mode, the manufacturer says its circuitry reads the condition of the battery as it’s working it over with the higher than usual voltage. When the charger’s diagnostics decide a battery is able to take a normal charge, the high voltage tapers down. The way to find this out is to disconnect it. If, upon recharging, the battery comes up good, then that is an indicator the problem is with the vehicle’s electrical system, not the battery itself. Charge maintenance: a voltage of 13.6V is delivered for 30 minutes following each voltage retention test, with sufficient current to sustain it against natural self-discharge or drain from permanently active vehicle components or connected accessories (alarm, immobiliser). The voltage retention test and charge maintenance periods continue alternating half-hourly until the battery is disconnected. The test result is updated during each subsequent test. On the other hand, I can also see where a techie gearhead might like all the bells and whistles on the Optimate 4. I mean it works, for sure, and it works beautifully and it looks very cool and it has all sorts of lights and things.

BUY

Various size and types of motorcycle batteries where connected to the OptiMate 4 over a two week period to test all OptiMate4 functions. During the next 30 minutes the OptiMate offers the battery a supporting (and) maintaining charge, but only to the extent necessary to counter any losses or connected loads such as an electronic alarm or immobilizer. Overcharging and/or overheating of the battery is ruled out by this 50% duty cycle as the battery is interactively maintained for 30 minutes and then rests during the power drain tests of each alternative 30 minutes. So the battery is always 100% good to go, but never overcharged. When the ground signal can’t find a good path to ground, you can get all sorts of strange electronic burn-out issues, especially if there are 230 volt devices on an uninsulated (grounded) floor, such as ovens & electric water-heaters.” As for the desulfating feature, all we can say is we suspect this is at best for batteries that have only been left sitting for months, and not years-old batteries like the one that Duke should have recycled long ago.
