About this deal

Have you ever wanted to be a gardener for a royal palace? Sounds like a pretty cush job, right? Well this particular palace, inhabited by the Queen of Hearts, has some pretty strict guidelines to follow. And if you don’t? Off with your heads!

Here’s a Medium card with a tile placed in the same position on the board. Remember, medium cards can either be color to color or shape to shape. Medium card example. Not At All,” Said Alice: “She’s So Extremely—” Just Then She Noticed That the Queen Was Close Behind Her, Listening: So She Went On “—Likely to Win, That It’s Hardly Worth While Finishing the Game.” The Red Queen, axe held aloft. The game aims to work together to finish the palace garden according to a random set of cards that represent the Queen of Hearts’ whims. A nicely sculpted gardener miniature traces your progress while another one, the Queen, chases you. If the Queen reaches you before you complete your goals, the last thing you hear will be, "Off With Their Heads!" and the players will lose the game. North Star Games Paint the Roses is a 2-5 player cooperative logic deduction game that automatically adapts to your skill during play. The card shows a diamond-shaped hedge and a heart-shaped hedge. This player has chosen a tile with a diamond-shaped hedge with a yellow rose. Since the diamond hedge on the tile matches their card and is adjacent to two tiles that have heart-shaped hedges, they place two of their cubes on the tile.

5. No Clue Tokens is a Great Clue!

Every turn, together as a team you must guess at least one of these secret whim cards. You can't say what your card shows, but by carefully placing a new shrub tile into the garden (taken from those available in the Greenhouse) you are able to reveal clues, tokens that will show any matches between the arrangement in the garden and the secret whims each player holds in their hands. If you are a fan of deduction games, routinely play with 3-4 players, and don’t mind having to really struggle with the first couple plays, I highly recommend Paint the Roses. Obviously, the added benefit of the depth is that you really benefit from additional plays as time goes on. And I highly recommend going for the deluxe edition as the expansion modules provide new wrinkles that give the game even more legs. Paint the Roses is a 2-5 player cooperative puzzle game set in the whimsical world of Alice in Wonderland. You and your teammates have been appointed the new Royal Gardeners for the Queen of Hearts but f ail to arrange the garden according to the Queen's changing whims and the last thing you hear will be, "Off With Their Heads!".

Final Score: 4.5 Stars – Beautifully produced deduction game that has some more depth than what you see on the surface. Everyone draws a new Whim card if they need one. Don’t forget, only ONE player can have an Easy Whim card at any one time.In the lower left corner of each card is a number. This is the number of spaces you’ll move forward on a correct guess. With an Easy card you’ll move one or two spaces; Medium cards will move you ___ to ___ spaces; Hard cards will move you four to five spaces. I Am Not Crazy; My Reality is Just Different From Yours Once the garden is full, the players win. If the Queen ever reaches the gardeners, their beheaded bodies are probably dragged into the bushes. All we’re told is that they didn’t win. When a new tile is placed you’ll add cubes for how many adjacent tiles match your whim card. Game Experience: Guessing is just that—making a guess as to what is on a player’s card. After that, depending whether the guess was correct or not, The Red Queen will move a little or a lot. Overall, the expansion increases a lot the level of challenge of this game making each session much more interesting. That, however, doesn’t make for much of a game, does it? This example is really only possible with an Easy card (color to color) and only one player at a time can have an Easy card. Everyone else needs to choose either a Medium or a Hard card. Let’s take a look at each of those then.

To add more to the strategic aspect of the game, you need to remind that a player is not allowed to discuss their whim card. Contrary to a lot of other games, a very good player will not be able to take the lead every turn and they will need to patiently see the rest of the team fail or succeed without their help.

Paint the Roses Expansion: Escape the Castle

This organizer has always elicited Oohs and Aahs when people first see it, drawing them right into the game before it even starts. And of course, if you master all this, the deluxe edition has some mini-expansions that can be added to add even more to keep in mind throughout the game. These have so far universally been great and add a nice change to the base game. Final Thoughts: An Easy Whim will show a colour-to-colour match in a hexomino fashion, in one of ten combinations worth 1 or 2 points.. A Medium Whim has either a colour-to-colour match or a shape-to-shape match and is worth 2 to 3 points. Finally a Hard Whim will have either a colour-to-colour match, a shape-to-shape match or a colour-to-shape match, worth 4 to 5 points. Paint The Roses: Taking A Turn Game Contents: 1 Deluxe Game Trayz Insert, 1 Deluxe Dual Layered Garden board, 32 Deluxe Acrylic Shrub tiles, 1 Dual Layered Greenhouse board, 132 Whim Cards, 30 Clue Tokens, 3 Notepads, 3 Character Miniatures, 4 Flower Tokens, 1 Velvet Bag, 1 Royal Log Notebook. The Red Queen starts with a single red rose under her. This means for each correct guess she’ll only move one space closer. For each incorrect guess, she’ll move twice that number, or two spaces. As players move around the board, there are set spaces where, once you pass over them, The Red Queen acquires another rose. And another rose. Two roses means two spaces for a correct answer and four for an incorrect guess; three roses means three spaces for a correct guess and six for an incorrect guess.

Deluxe edition adds nice upgrades and mini expansions add some longevity once you get the hang of it.Another key aspect of the game you will experience is its strong sense of escalation. The Queen starts very slow but she progressively moves faster and faster giving you a strong sense of urgency. You soon realize that the better you play the faster the Queen will move and that she will always be very close to you when you arrive at laying the last tiles. It is not infrequent to place the last tile just to realize the Queen’s last move will chop off your head. Escape The Castle However, this is where the game gets interesting. Do those two cubes mean a match between the diamond and the hearts? Or the diamond and the spade? What about the yellow rose and the two red roses? Or the two purple roses?
