John and Jane Smith are two strangers who have been placed together by a "mysterious agency" to undertake a series of espionage missions. The five will be joined by Ryan McParland (Derry Girls), Don Gilet (Sherwood), Delove Akra ( Drillin), Marsha Miller (Top Boy), Simon Wolfe (Carnival Row), Marcus Onilude (Big Boys), Jola Olajide (Doctors), Jack Bannon (Endeavour), Jo Martin (Doctor Who), and Cale Cole making his debut. The BBC share: “Grime Kids charts the rise of a fictional group of young adults growing up in the late 90s, dreaming of being able to make their voice heard through grime music. Anyone with even a passing interest in grime music or East London spirit will be well served by Grime Kids. They experience "first loves, disapproving parents and brushes with danger" while attempting to get their music on the radio.Even as he sets the scene, describing for the reader his home borough of Tower Hamlets, his focus is on shared experiences rather than his specific ones. But the real star here is the friendship between the boys, and the two episodes I watched lean into this hard. All the biggest names in grime feature in the book, Wiley, Tinchy Stryder, Skepta, and Risky Roadz among them, and plenty more besides. But on the whole, this is a joyous representation of a very particular slice of time: being young, bored, with your whole life ahead of you and limitless potential at your fingertips. The festival will close with the World Premiere of Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya’s dystopian drama, The Kitchen.
