At the heart of the microphone is a dual‑diaphragm, one‑inch, centre‑terminated capsule made in sE’s own factory in Shanghai. The mic covers the frequency range 20Hz to 20kHz (‑3dB) and like most mics of this type, has some lift in the presence region. However, most of the HF lift occurs around 10 to 12 kHz, giving roughly 4 to 5 dB of lift in cardioid and omni modes, which avoids giving excessive boost to the potentially harsh upper mids. In figure‑of‑eight mode the presence hump is focussed around 5kHz, peaking at around +4dB, though the general sound matching between the three patterns is pretty consistent. The sE2300 manages a sensitivity of 24mV/Pa (‑32.5dBV) and in conjunction with the pad can accommodate SPLs up to 146dB. Its A‑weighted noise figure is a healthy 9dBA. In Use Yes, it's not the fastest reacting mic diaphragm around, even within the large diaphragm category, so more detailed mics can be found. But then again, most are more coloured, and cost more.

In fact, it has been suggested that this mic is named as it is because uses a twin pair of the capsules used in the older (and much loved for its' versatility) single pattern sE 2200a, an entirely differently and more conventionally shaped model. I would personally add that if sE thought of “cloning” something of the venerable AKG 414 in its' various versions (EB, ULS, B-TLII, XLS, etc), then it must have been cloning its' universality and ubiquity in studios around the world. Actually, the word would not be “cloning”, but rather... earning. The handy 100Hz bass cut filter also means that you can reduce the proximity effect and cut out any "rumbling" that can occur with movement of air when a mic is placed close to an instrument or sound source. This is also a big help when recording outdoors or in a windy environment. Deployed in stereo arrays....M/S, Blulein, and coincident or non coincident...the pairs performed well and seemed to be well matched. Used them on 12 ft boom stands over a choir and they performed very well in an application i tend to favor SDC's for.

Build quality and self-noise are both premium here. The microphone feels good in the hand and should last a while, even with heavy use. Self-noise is limited, making for an excellent sonic listening and recording experience. The 4400a is the latest in a lineage of mics started 6 years ago with our sE2200a. Based on the same capsule tuning, but with a dual capsule to give multi polar pattern function, this mic is a rarity… a true all-rounder. They were given to me, so I don't really know how much they are worth but I wouldn't pay as much as a 414 for them. Auffällig ist zunächst, dass die Klangcharakteristik bei den verschiedenen Abständen nahezu gewahrt bleibt, hier ist das sE also recht unproblematisch. Nicht von der Hand zu weisen ist aber auch, dass das 4400a zu den Mikros gehört, die recht höhenlastig ausgelegt sind. Leider geraten diese im Bereich der mittleren Höhen zu plakativ, so dass sie, wie bei Heidruns Vortrag, schon unangenehm auffallen. Zudem werden dadurch etwaige Nebengeräusche betont, wie in den zweiten Aufnahmen von Heidrun recht gut zu hören ist. But if you already own it's Austrian grandparent, or any other all-rounder, or a mic you are using to record clean and play with the sound in post-production (lo-fi, dirt, tube fx…) my advice would be, go look elsewhere.

Is this good or bad, obviously, is a matter of taste, but in many instances it will at least keep the often human problem littered task of lead vocal recording free of technical problems or added colour that might be enhancing, or annoying, to the point of getting distracting to the performance.

And, even if 60 and 120 Hz of low cut frequency are a lot more useful to me than the 75 and 150 Hz on the older AKG 414 models, an additional middle ground choice of say 90 Hz would have been most welcome (AKG have apparently listened up through the years, and the new 414 XLS series now feature 40, 80 and 120 Hz low cuts).
