About this deal

Old meets new! Here’s a comparison between the old Lion Knights from 6080 Lion King’s Castle, just to demonstrate how far printing standards have come. At 4,514 pieces, this is well and truly in biggest LEGO sets ever created territory, and a rarity for a non-Star Wars set, so you know LEGO means business. The good news is that there’s a way out of the dungeons. A section of the outer wall can be shifted aside, leading to sweet, sweet freedom.

Time to highlight another wonderful bit of construction wizardry! The square balcony area outside of the kid’s room is built on the hinged section of the larger castle, so it has to go through some contortions when changing display modes. The magic happens thanks to this heavily hinged bit of masonry.

Stage 1 – Farmer’s stall and wagon

Even the size of the latrine, squeezed as it is into the third floor with little room to fit between, is accurate to how toilets were generally designed in castles, when space was at a premium. Arguably, the only room missing is the biggest – a great hall of sorts. Something for customisers to create as an add-on build, perhaps.

Adding to the mystery – access to this room is through a trap door in the roof. Yeah, nothing sus about that. If that weren’t cool enough, she also has a paper cape, with the Lion Knights’ sigil printed onto it, which just elevates her to a whole new level of awesome. A large part of the castle’s charm is its irregular design. Largely symmetrical castles do exist and Lego could have easily replicated this via a couple of large baseplates. But many castles were added to or altered over the years and the Lion Knights' Castle reflects this. The hulking set is built atop a variety of differently shaped tiles, resulting in a build that’s both believable and bursting with character. The front of the castle is equipped with a working drawbridge. The bridge itself is fairly sturdy, with long lengths of LEGO chain attached to work the play feature.

The Wizard Magisto also makes a return, albeit in very unassuming robes. There is no printing at all, and he sports a bushy new beard, but blue wizards like Magisto have been a staple in the more mystical LEGO Castle sets, so it seems right for him to be here. There’s just so much going on, and as you build the set, you’ll encounter all sorts of great little details hidden in every nook and cranny – like this gorgeous fountain and harpischord. EDIT TO ADD! Turns out I’m the one who’s full of it. Thanks to Jamin Hoyle for pointing out in the comments that the toilet actually empties outsidethe castle walls – and there’s a brown “frog” on the ground to prove it.
