I've always had to do things my way; I play guitar my way; I've taken myself to the edges of life my way; I've gotten clean my way; And I'm still here. Whether or not I deserve to be is another story." - Slash Every chapter of the book tells – literally – a chapter from Slash‘s life in different stations that he passed through. A big portion of the book talked about Gun N Roses and what happened behind the scenes.

I don’t mind working hard,” he says. “What’s exciting for me is to actually have something to do. It’s exciting to know that there’s something I’m doing tomorrow, as opposed to, like [twiddles thumbs], ‘Ah, hmm…’” I would recommend this book to any Guns N' Roses fan who maybe wants a clearer picture of why the band split up and what the dynamics were between Slash and Axl at the time. Mostly it's just an enjoyable read, because if there's one thing you can say for Slash it's that he hasn't led a boring life. I loved the way it was written because the structure of the book is exactly how i tend to tell stories to my friends. The tone of the book is neither boastful nor repentant. Slash tells it like it is, without false modesty. I appreciated the shooting-from-the-hip approach, except possibly for one thing, namely the peer-bashing (It comes across as slightly narcissistic when “every other band is rubbish and hateful except us”). Taking into account, however, the nature of the L.A. scene at the time, and the larger-than-life personalities involved, it probably shouldn’t be surprising that there would be some bad blood.

I'm a guitar player. Not in the same league as Mr Hudson, but I know a little bit about the world in which he lives. a b Rymas, J.R. "Sweet Marshall o' Mine Part 2: The Breakthrough – Case Closed!". He started playing the guitar and hung out a lot with Steve Adler, the two later hooking up with Axl, Izzy and Duff to form Guns N´Roses. Never steady and reliable, most members drunk, stoned, junkies or all three, the band made a blistering album and a couple of other decent ones, and collapsed after a few record-breaking years of touring during which they became famous for going on late. Slash got himself together and formed Slash´s Snakepit and, later, Velvet Revolver, and at the time of writing is touring the world with a reformed Guns N´Roses. So I think we’re going to go well on into the future. I mean, Axl’s got a ton of shit that he recorded already, so we’re just going to get in there and just start getting into that thing, and then if we do a record and then do a tour, I could see that cycle going on endlessly.”

Seems like he didn’t wanna bad mouth Axl in any way and didn’t want to go into little details concerning any events that might’ve happend between them, perhaps it was still an open wound for him at the time… Slash Guitarist of the year 2012". If you are looking for a tell-all expose that exposes the seedy underbelly of the music industry, and reveals the inner workings of Axl's mind, giving a blow-by-blow account of every addled moment of the Gn'R world, don't buy this book. He groans. “Well, I wrote that stupid book,” he says (referring to Slash - The Autobiography). “When I was doing book tours for the book, I was asked more than a dozen times: ‘What about when your kids read it?’ I said: ‘My kids are never going to read it. The word ‘slash’ has its roots in the old French word ‘esclachier’, meaning ‘to break’. He’s been breaking things his whole life – records, rules, bones, hearts. But his appetite for destruction was matched only by his work ethic. Axl remembered a riff that I'd played him when he was living over at my mom's house [...]. We were sitting around rehearsal looking to write something new when that riff came to Axl's mind. [...] I started playing it and instantly Steve came up with a beat, Duff joined in with a bass line, and away we went. I kept throwing parts out to build on it: the chorus part, the solo, as Axl came up with the lyrics. Duff was the glue on that song - he came up with the breakdown, that wild rumbling bass line, and Izzy provided the texture. In about three hours, the song [Welcome to the Jungle] was complete. The arrangement is virtually the same as it appears on the album. (pp 108-9)In 2001, at the age of 35, Slash was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a form of congestive heart failure, caused by his many years of alcohol and drug abuse. Originally given between six days and six weeks to live, he survived through physical therapy and the implantation of a defibrillator. [116] As of 2011, Slash had been clean and sober since 2006, [99] which he credited to his then-wife Ferrar. [111] In 2009, following his mother's death from lung cancer, he quit smoking.
