About this deal

Axel Scheffler is a star illustrator whose instantly recognizable, warm and witty illustrations have achieved worldwide acclaim and numerous awards. She was the UK Children’s Laureate 2011-13 and has been honoured with an MBE for Services to Literature.

Best known for her collaborations with Axel Scheffler, each of these vivid rhyming stories is a triumph of imagination. Axel is the illustrator of wonderful novelty, gift and poetry books for Macmillan, such as Fish Who Dream of Trees (Two Hoots) and the bestselling The Bedtime Bear , The Tickle Book and Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes - and of course, he is the illustrator of some of the world's best-loved picture books, including modern classics The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child , which together have sold over 17 million copies worldwide. I imagined the witch to be quite young-looking but very untidy, so at first when I saw Axel’s sketches of a neatly-dressed old hag I was a bit taken aback. The witch and her cat fly happily over forests, rivers and mountains on their broomstick until a stormy wind blows away the witch’s hat, bow and wand. The theme of inclusion and the value of forming friendships with those who are different from us is a valuable lesson for young readers. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. Also available with redesigned covers are: The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child, The Snail and the Whale, The Smartest Giant in Town, Monkey Puzzle, Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book, and A Squash and a Squeeze. Axel also continues to illustrate for other authors as well, including Ian Whybrow and David Henry Wilson. Julia Donaldson is author of many of today’s best-loved picture books including The Gruffalo and Stick Man.

The Room on the Broom story follows a very kind witch and her cat on their travels as they ride on the broomstick and zoom about the place. Her other books include The Hospital Dog illustrated by Sara Ogilvie, The Christmas Pine illustrated by Victoria Sandøy and the hugely successful What the Ladybird Heard adventures illustrated by Lydia Monks. I really enjoy getting the children in the audience to help me act out the stories and sing the songs. How the cat purred and how the witch grinned, As they sat on their broomstick and flew through the wind. From soft toys to games, all the way through to personalised lunch boxes, mugs, cushions, and even more. The witch and her cat fly happily over forests, rivers and mountains on their broomstick until a stormy wind blows away the witch's hat, bow and wand.

Shame that it hasn't been packaged better, I'm not sure if forcing it through the letter box or how it was transported meant that the book was bent. Knowing that he wanted to live in another country and learn a second language, he moved to England to study illustration at the Bath Academy of Art. One of my television songs, A Squash and a Squeeze, was made into a book in 1993, with illustrations by the wonderful Axel Scheffler. Julia Donaldson is the outrageously talented, prize-winning author of some of the world's best-loved children's books, including modern classics The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child , which together have sold over 17 million copies worldwide, and the hugely successful What the Ladybird Heard adventures. The repetition and rhyming text in the book also make it engaging and enjoyable to read aloud, which can be beneficial for young children's language development. But long before he began his professional life, he had won his first drawing prize for an international chocolate company – his prize was a cuddly lilac cow.uk will use the information you provide on this form to be in touch with you and to provide updates and marketing. He has enjoyed particular success in his award-winning picture book collaborations with Julia Donaldson, but is also the best-selling illustrator of novelty books such as The Bedtime Bear. It’s a case of the more, the merrier, but the broomstick isn’t used to such a heavy load and it’s not long before . A very funny story of quick wits and friendship, Room on the Broom is another smash hit from the unparalleled picture book partnership of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, creators of The Gruffalo.
