About this deal

Let’s Go Play At the Adams’’ has become sought after and is often featured on wish lists of books people most desire to own. And once the children have her captured and begin torturing her, you are not kept in any kind of suspense. In 2019, Let's Go Play at the Adams', long out of print due to a complicated tangle of rights issues, was finally republished by Valancourt Press. On the back cover, Publishers Weekly state "A horror tale that will harrow you and haunt you long after you have finished it.

Out of print '70s cult novel is a fictionalized version of the horrifying Sylvia Likens torture/murder. As Matt Hayward tweeted recently; “Bad people doing and saying bad things in books is not an endorsement of those bad things. His father speculates on whether, in his last moments, Bobby finally found the ability to forgive himself.

I'm no expert, but I read a lot of psychological horror, and the thoughts going through all of these different heads seemed spot on to me. The children, apart from their horrifying actions, are made to look as much as they can like people. He quotes several contemporary reviews and ponders why there remains a fascination with the book, even though the author only published the one and has been long dead.

But no, Johnson's writing seems to skirt around this just enough so that the kids simply come across as evil. The waiting for what's going to come next, the waiting to see how far the kids will take it, the waiting to see how long Barbara has to endure being tied up, waiting to see how they'll next take away some more of her dignity. He was frequently described as having different ticks and spasms which at one point suggested maybe Tourette’s or schizophrenia. I highly recommend this book to those who can read the book and truly grasp the message of the tale.

I just found the writing style a little disjoined at times, I think it would have benefitted from better editing. A weirdo 12 year old with violent tendencies is really nothing new – Paul was just a little more over the top! I'm fascinated by the mental processes that people go through when they're in the process of objectifying others -- and, from that perspective, this book is amazing. It worked well to demonstrate Barbara’s continued descent but I felt no connection to the Terry character, nor in the epilogue as well.

At the heart, there's the same soul sickness, the same nihilistic sense that the world is an empty and cruel place. Second, most of the book is about the kids answering for their crimes (and the tragedy their parents go through). The nightmare relentlessly unfolds, gradual, yet step by step with tremendous, undeniable, excruciating inevitability. I found that she become more emboldened with the incarceration of Barbara and enjoyed that she was involved with the entire process. It’s a book that has a profound effect on people, one that keeps horror fans looking for it almost as much as it makes them breathe a sigh of relief that it remained (until recently released as part of the Paperbacks From Hell collection of reprints) incredibly scarce. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. She’s accepted the fact that she’s a prisoner but the ending comes when she knows there’s no escape and that the children will go through with their plan and kill her.

Immature, terrifying people who do whatever they feel like because they can and think up convoluted justifications for why they should hurt a human being as part of their game, but people nonetheless. Mentor: Bobby's father, who helps him find the inner strength to testify against the rest of the five in court. The boundary which separates right from wrong is easily blurred and with little provocation becomes indistinguishable.Whether this was to capitalize on the notoriety of the book or to try and make a decent effort to follow the children post murder, Johnson himself had done a decent enough job of philosophizing what was to come for the group. If you are reading this review on Goodreads you’ll have already seen my star rating, but before I divulge it here, I wanted to go through a few things about my rating. Meanwhile, the narration from the Freedom Five’s point of view continues minimizing Barbara’s presence until finally they stop thinking of her as a person at all, instead referring to her simply by her pronouns, and then in the end as “it. It begins with the what-if premise of Barbara being saved at the last minute, and the kids' activities exposed as a result, and explores the resulting media frenzy and criminal trials, as well as Barbara's physical and emotional recovery from her ordeal.
