About this deal

While collecting glasses, we were delighted to get our hands on the newly launched Jancis Robinson + Richard Brendon “1” collaboration. If you don’t know her, Jancis Robinson is one of the world’s foremost wine critics. So, this particular glass comes with a lot of built-in street credit! Which Glass Won?

Glass Shape and Size: Most importantly, you need enough volume in the glass to collect aromas. It was the early months of quarantine and I’d just lost my dad to a very brief and unexpected battle with cancer. He and I had shared a love of wine since I was old enough to take my first sip from his glass, and in the years since, my obsession only grew. Ultimately, I ended up pursuing a career as a wine and spirits writer, not only to fortify my bond with my dad, but to solidify his pride in me. Designed by Rene Gabriel, the renowned Swiss wine critic because as a wine lover, he was trying to fine a solution to the many different type of glasses for wines. Multi-Piece: Most glasses are made with multiple pieces. The high-end models are not, which is why they are so much more durable despite how fragile they look and feel. Still, there’s nothing wrong with being multi-piece, make sure they get the seams off. (You can feel the seam on the stem.) There are five ounces in a standard pour of wine, which equates to five glass per 750-milliliter bottle. If you need to stretch a bottle to six glasses, try to only pour four ounces. On sale now at SGD 220. Price stated is per set of 6 stems (comes in gift box of 6) and inclusive of FREE DELIVERY.

Gabriel-Glas may not roll off the tongue the way Riedel does, but if you’re not familiar with this brand, you’re missing out on some exception glassware. The brand is the brainchild of Rene Gabriel, a former wine critic who developed this glass to be a uniform — yet ideal — glass for tastings. He spent two years developing the glass, which (unlike the Riedel approach) is designed to be ideal for any type of wine and is not varietal specific. In other words, it’s intended to be the perfect “all in one” wine glass. The first thing that anyone will notice about this glass is the unique and fascinating shape—but there's much more to the Josephinenhütte Josephine No. 3 Red Wine Glass than what first meets the eye. A visually striking glass crafted from lead-free crystal, it's also an ideal vessel for your next glass of robust red wine. While it might be a bit pricey compared to other options, it's a statement piece—and also happens to be a very practical red wine vessel.

Then, at the top-end of wine glasses, there are many options. We loved Zalto and Gabriel-Glas, as we mentioned above, but could come up with reasons to love each of the glasses we tested.

I tried both glasses with a variety of wines and have to agree that they performed perfectly. The flattened base exposes the wine in the glass to the maximum amount of surface area, and the gently tapering sides effectively keep aromas trapped inside — and prevent the wine from sloshing out. They look beautiful, and while they’re on the large side, they aren’t nearly as big as some of Riedel’s monstrously huge goblets. When you have used Gabriel Glas, you will notice that the design makes it the best universal glass in the market. Its bowl is wide enough unlike others who are not wide enough for Pinot and Chardonnay. Others who try to copy/replicate will not achieve the same effect. Nothing else comes close! The range starts with the standard (“StandArt”) version – a machine-cut, dishwasher-safe, lead-free crystal glass. The other option is the Gold Edition, a mouth-blown glass that is lighter and finer but otherwise identical. The StandArt glass weighs in at just 145g and the mouth-blown Gold Edition a mere 90g. With its timeless design and wide bowl, the glass is ideal for white or red wines (and sparkling too, for that matter), as the aesthetic presentation of the wine is attractive and the aromatics are rich and pleasing. We found that delicate aromatics opened up a bit more after swirling, allowing us to experience more of the wine characteristics. Top points were awarded for its aesthetics, and we liked the fact that the base is the same width as the bell, which is always a sound design choice in a quality wine glass. We also appreciated the way the glass accentuated the olfactory notes of white wine in particular, with its more narrow design probably more suited for pretty whites than for robust reds. While this isn't a cheap glass, it will surely be a hit with anyone whose wine habits skew toward the white side of things.
