About this deal

We love that the cooling and heating buttons allow us to switch between fan mode and heating mode with the touch of a finger. I bought this model in 2017 for our master bedroom. I wanted a quality fan that could heat and not run up the electric bill. After researching, I chose to spend a bit of extra money on the Dyson AM09. You can lower the desired temperature to as low as one degree, but doing so won’t actually activate the fan; you’ll need to press the cooling button and switch to fan-only mode. Switch from heating mode to cooling and you’ll also get a face full of warm air for roughly thirty seconds before the heating elements cool down and the flow of air drops in temperature. Dyson Supersonic – this hair dryer has an intelligent heat control for shine. It also features the Dyson digital motor which spins on average 6 times faster than other hair dryer motors at one inaudible frequency – yet is a third of the weight.

No spinning blades or anything so it's pretty safe for children also it means no collection of dust The fan and heater are controlled by a remote that magnetically attaches to the top of the unit. The remote was useful for changing the setting of the fan without moving from our seats, but it is the only way to control several features of the fan, so make sure you don’t lose it. Oscillation is one of the remote-controlled features and one of our favorites. The fan moves quietly along a wide arc, delivering a blast of warm air across the length of a room. It also tilts up and down so you can direct the airflow right where you need it. Dyson launched its latest hot + cool bladeless air heater, the AM09, in Japan and the US late last year as a replacement to the AM05, but British customers can finally get the improved model, which promises Jet Focus Control for more powerful, more direct airflow and a motor that’s up to 75% quieter than the outgoing model. We’ve been putting one through its paces to see if it has what it takes to keep you cool in the summer yet nicely snug in the winter.

An Alternative - the AM05

See our shortlist of the best cordless vacuums to find one that's great value for money. 5. Recycle your old vacuum for free

The 3-metre power cord shouldn’t cause you an problems when it comes to plug placement, either – I found this afforded enough freedom to place the fan in any discreet but efficient location. Other Things to Consider

Cylinder Vacuums – the cylinder vacuums of Dyson can remove dust from all sorts of floors and will follow you around your home with greater control. You would expect the prices of older vacuums to go down rather than up, but we've found that some Dysons end up being sold for a price that well exceeds the original amount – even several years after they were launched. Purifiers - Dyson purifiers capture 99.95% of potentially harmful pollutants, and keep them trapped. The AM09 isn’t oppressively loud, either. A new aerodynamic diffuser helps cut down on fan noise – it’s considerably quieter than its predecessor. The room filling mode is the noisier of the two modes, but not by much.

Perhaps more impressively is how the AM09 manages to achieve this while being significantly quieter than the outgoing AM05. The improved motor is barely audible on the lowest heat setting, and only slightly louder on the lowest fan levels. We could comfortably get to sleep with the fan on a medium setting, and it didn’t prove distracting when watching TV or having a conversation during the daytime either. It’s a welcome improvment over the old model and a major selling point for anyone with a loud, traditional fan heater. The AM09 looks almost identical to the outgoing AM05, with a tall, oblong-shaped aperture and a chunky base which hides its brushless motor. Dyson has removed almost all of the buttons from the front, replacing them with a single power button and white LCD display showing airflow speed and desired temperature. Without the bundled remote, you’ll only be able to turn the fan on and off, and cycle through target temperatures by holding in the single button on the front of the unit. There’s no option to turn the power and temperature LEDs off, which could be a little irritating if the fan is directly in your line of sight when trying to get to sleep. There is at least a nine hour sleep timer, so you can set it to switch off automatically before you drop off.

Will you be claiming the VAT back?

Like on the company’s past air multipliers, a brushless motor and bladeless design combine to ensure airflow is not buffeted. This might not sound like a major advantage, but you won’t want to revert to a choppy, bladed fan once you’ve tried it. It’s an expensive option, but one which gives a luxury performance. Not surprisingly, the AM09 also earns accolades for its functional design as well. The remote on the Dyson AM09 is conveniently designed, with buttons that are intuitive and easy to press. We love that the cooling and heating buttons allow us to switch between fan mode and heating mode with the touch of a finger. We also appreciate the magnet that holds the remote on the top of the unit. Once you get in the habit of storing it there, it holds securely and will stay there indefinitely. As well as being far easier on the eye, the AM09 is considerably safer than some alternatives. It won’t scold the wayward hands of any inquisitive child like a an electric bar heater would, for example. After 30 minutes pumping out at full heat, the AM09’s body was comfortable to touch – you could move it easily without discomfort. Models in the same range (eg the V15 Detect range or the V11 range) usually have the same core machine – the only difference is the accessories and supplied floor heads.
