Her shy, stammering father was pushed, much against his will, on to the throne. One consideration was said to be that he feared the burden that would inevitably fall on his daughter now that she was heir to the throne, though more pertinently he was by no means alone in worrying that he himself was not up to the job. “I thought it all very, very wonderful and I expect the abbey did too,” Elizabeth wrote in a note to her parents about her father’s coronation in May 1937. “The arches and beams at the top were covered with a sort of haze of wonder as papa was crowned, at least I thought so.” By contrast, Her Majesty’s sang-froid was widely admired. She told friends: “I got out of bed, put on my dressing gown and slippers, drew myself up to my full regal height, pointed to the door and said: ‘Get out!’ and he didn’t … He just talked the usual sort of bilge that people talk to me on walkabouts. I can handle that.” Not entirely calm: a footman reported: “I have never heard the Queen so angry,” as she spoke to the police. The home secretary, Willie Whitelaw, offered his resignation but it was waved aside by the prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. Perhaps the most remarkable economy was the decision, decided by the Major government but implemented by the Blair administration following the 1997 landslide election, to scrap the Royal Yacht Britannia, one of the Queen’s most relished perks: she was observed to be in tears for the only time in her public life as she watched the ship being decommissioned. Elizabeth launches her golden jubilee celebrations with a speech to both houses of parliament. 9 April 2005

Queen Elizabeth II: April 21 1926-September 8 2022

The Queen further distances the monarchy from the Duke of York by stripping him of his military affiliations and royal patronages. The palace also says he will not use the style His Royal Highness in any official capacity. The move means Prince Andrew is completely removed from royal life. 15 February 2022 Elizabeth soon started taking on other public duties. Appointed colonel-in-chief of the Grenadier Guards by her father, Elizabeth made her first public appearance inspecting the troops in 1942. She also began to accompany her parents on official visits within Britain.Princess Margaret in a limousine on her way to Clarence House after a weekend in the country where Peter Townsend was also a guest, 17 October 1955 Photograph: Monty Fresco/Getty 31 October 1955 them heretofore belonging or appertaining." In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II said "that I and my children shall be styled and known as the house and family of Windsor, and that my descendants who marry and their descendants, shall bear the name of Windsor." This confirmed the Royal Family name of Windsor. [4] She would later describe him as “my strength and stay” through 74 years of marriage, before his death in 2021, aged 99.

The handsome young royal couple and their babies were the subject of intense – though in those days still deferential – media scrutiny: informal photographs of the young family were much publicised; though when the princess’s former nanny Marion Crawford, “Crawfie”, published an entirely anodyne and sycophantic memoir in 1950, she was cast into outer darkness by the family. The palace’s press officer, Commander Richard Colville, known as the Abominable No Man for his disdain and reluctance to impart any information whatever, would remain in post for 20 years and in doing so unwittingly contributed to a long-term distrust and antagonism between newspapers and royalty. Elizabeth’s father became King George VI and, at age 10, Lilibet, as she was known in the family, became heir to the throne. Their first son, Charles, was born in 1948, followed by Princess Anne, in 1950, Prince Andrew, in 1960, and Prince Edward, in 1964. Between them, they gave their parents eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.He said during the period of mourning and change he and his family would be “comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held”. The Queen spends a night at King Edward VII’s hospital after being admitted for “preliminary investigations” having cancelled a two-day trip to Northern Ireland on the advice of doctors that she should rest for a few days. A palace source said a “cautious approach” had been taken by the medical team aiding the monarch and the overnight stay was for practical reasons, adding that she returned to Windsor and was undertaking “light duties” the next day. It was her first overnight stay in hospital since 2013, when she was treated for gastroenteritis. 13 Jan 2022

Queen Elizabeth II - BBC News Obituary: Queen Elizabeth II - BBC News

Queen Elizabeth II’s tenure as head of state spanned post-war austerity, the transition from empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War and the UK’s entry into – and withdrawal from – the European Union. Emeritus Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz said: "I had the privilege of meeting Her Majesty The Queen on several occasions. When she opened buildings and attended major events in Cambridge, she always engaged warmly with our staff and students as well as showing a continued interest in the University. Princess Margaret releases a statement confirming she will not marry Gp Capt Peter Townsend. Her relationship with him had been controversial because he was divorced, and her request to marry him – with its echoes of the abdication crisis – had been opposed by large sections of the establishment. November 1956 The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”We are enormously grateful for all her wonderful contributions to Queens’, including how she inspired so many members of our community. She will be sorely missed." Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born on 21 April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street, Mayfair, London W1, the London home of her maternal grandparents the Earl and Countess of Strathmore. [2] [3] She was the daughter of Prince Albert, Duke of York (later King George VI) Windsor, King of the United Kingdom and Lady Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon. [1] Elizabeth was crowned at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953, aged 27, in front of a then-record TV audience estimated at more than 20 million people. After the start of the 21 st century, Elizabeth experienced two great losses. She said goodbye to both her sister, Margaret, and her mother in 2002, the same year she celebrated her Golden Jubilee that marked her 50 th year on the throne. Margaret, known for being more of an adventurous soul than other royals and who was barred from marrying an early love, died in February after suffering a stroke. Only a few weeks later, Elizabeth’s mother died at Royal Lodge on March 30 at the age of 101. In the last 70 years there has also been much discussion about the environment and concern regarding climate change. In 2021 it was the Queen who welcomed scientists and world leaders to the United Nations Climate Change Conference - or COP26 - held in the UK.

Elizabeth’s other great-grandchildren include Savannah Phillips, Isla Phillips, Mia Tindall, Lena Tindall, August Brooksbank, Lucas Tindall, and Sienna Mozzi. Reign Princess Elizabeth heard of the death of her father while she and Philip were at Sagana Lodge, their home in Kenya (given to her by Kenyan officials as a wedding present), and so she succeeded to the title of monarch of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 6 February 1952. Much later in her reign she would be used by more callow prime ministers too: by David Cameron to warn obliquely against Scottish independence during the 2014 referendum campaign and more shamelessly by Johnson during the parliamentary Brexit debates of 2019 to prorogue parliament, a manoeuvre condemned as unlawful by the supreme court. In neither of these decisions was the Queen culpable, being required to act on advice from prime ministers, and the obloquy ultimately fell on them. The Duchess of Sussex gives birth to a daughter. Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor is eighth in line to the throne. 20 October 2021 I was appointed a chaplain to the Queen in 2015, becoming Dean of the Chapel Royal in Scotland from 2019, a position that I continue to occupy following my move to Cambridge last year. I met the Queen on various ceremonial and social occasions, and twice I was privileged to be her weekend guest at Balmoral when preaching at Crathie Kirk. In the numerous tributes paid to her over the past week, I can recognize the Queen I met. These form a coherent pattern in describing someone who invariably displayed kindness, determination, cheerfulness, and much practical wisdom. Perhaps more than any monarch since James VI took the road south to unite the crowns in 1603, the Queen has enjoyed a deep connection to the people and land of Scotland. There has been a fittingness about the peaceful end to her reign at Balmoral Castle.
