Nearly a decade on after Billy Elliot the Musical opened in the West End, the piece is looking as healthy as ever, not least because of the way librettist and lyricist Lee Hall, composer Elton John, director Stephen Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling have managed to combine the raw reality of struggling through the 1984-85 miners’ strike with the dreams of a boy who lives to dance. The repetition of 'solidarity forever' is an empowering musical motif to represent the perceived power of the miners union. Wilkinson, and Deka Walmsley, Ann Emery, and Chris Grahamson as Billy's father, grandmother, and older brother, respectively.

I really thought this character needed to be much harsher, stricter, he was tough but I didn't really fear him or his rule. Billu Elliot closed in Madrid on 10 March 2020, when performances were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tony award-winner David Alvarez, from the original Broadway production, reprised his character in its adult version for this production.The area they live in is of course very working class with small terrace housing along steep hills and flatcaps everywhere and the general attitude of all the men is somewhat old fashioned. The production was originally intended for the Erkel Theatre which has more seats but was relocated after the ticket sales started.
