inspected visually to confirm that it has a rated residual operating current ( I Δn) not exceeding 30 mA as required by Regulation 415.1.1, and When verifying whether an RCD can provide additional protection care must be taken to ensure that the device is tested at a test current appropriate to the operating characteristic to which the device was designed. Indent (ii) however requires the use of overvoltage protection devices to protect a Safety Service. This is defined in Part 2 as; “An electrical system for electrical equipment provided to protect or warn persons in the event of a hazard, or essential to their evacuation from a location.” The type of test is selected on the instrument according to the RCD type. When the instrument setting selected is for an AC Type RCD, the test current applied is a 50 Hz alternating current. However, when the instrument setting selected is an A Type RCD, a pulsed direct current (DC) is superimposed on the 50 Hz AC waveform. This time, Amendment 1 is withdrawn on 27th September 2022 to bring BS 7671 into line with other British Standards when they are reviewed.

Higher Risk Residential Buildings are assumed to be residential buildings over 18 m in height or in excess of six storeys, whichever is met first. Should this building incorporate a business premises on the ground floor for example then this too could fall under this requirement. PD IEC/TR 62350:2006 Guidance for the correct use of residual current-operated protective devices (RCDs) for household and similar use. Further information on RCD testing can be found in IET Guidance Note 3 Inspection and Testing and PD IEC TR 62350:2006 Guidance for the correct use of residual current-operated protective devices (RCDs) for household and similar use which states that ‘ The testing current should be applied between the upstream and downstream terminal of the RCD’, see Figure 4 extracted from IET Guidance Note 3 Inspection and Testing. Where necessary, Regulations in BS 7671 specifying signs and notices have had their terminology modified to align with their classification as either warning notices or instruction notices.

What are the changes to the requirements for selection of RCD Types?

Previously, effectiveness under 643.7 and 643.8 was verified where the RCD disconnects within 40ms when tested at a current equal to or higher than five times its rated residual operating current. This has now been aligned with 643.7 and 643.8 and the new regulations are as follows: Some RCD test instruments however, have an adjustable residual operating current range allowing a value of 250 mA to be set, eliminating the above issue. The presence of SPDs in an installation shall be indicated by an information notice at or near the relevant distribution board(s).

the use of Pink for the identification of a conductor whose sole purpose is a functional earth, along with the alphanumeric designation FE, was implemented by Corrigendum 2018, to align with the harmonized standard BS EN 60445:2017 Basic and safety principles for man-machine interface, marking and identification. Identification of equipment terminals, conductor terminations and conductors. Regardless of RCD type, e.g. AC, A, F or B, an alternating current test shall be used at the rated residual operating current (I Δn), with a maximum operating time not exceeding 300 ms for general non-delay type RCDs. Generally, an RCD either works or it doesn’t and, in essence, the test is to prove that the RCD is functional and is not intended to confirm that it still performs as per the relevant product standards and manufacturers requirements. RCD testing required by product standards is carried out by the manufacturer and is called type testing. For further information on the different RCD Types and the selection process, see IET Wiring Matters article (Issue 77 September 2019), ‘Which RCD Type?’

Cascaded RCDs for selectivity

These proposed changes are also reflected in proposed updates to Appendix 7. In addition, the informative Appendix 7 Harmonized cable core colours includes a new item 8: Colour codes for diagrams and specifications, which summarizes (in Table 7F) the BS 7645 colour codes, and recommends that they are used, where required, to identify conductors in operation and maintenance information, such as wiring diagrams and termination schedules. Proposed new Regulation 514.9.2

BS EN 61009-1:2012+A13:2021 Residual current operated circuit-breakers with integral overcurrent protection for household and similar uses (RCBOs). General rules. It was therefore agreed that the testing procedure could be greatly simplified and safety would remain unaffected since RCDs are, in any event, tested extensively by manufacturers prior to sale. What are the changes to the requirements for RCD testing?Residual current protective devices shall be selected and erected such as to limit the risk of unwanted tripping. The following should be considered: Where an RCD is installed to provide additional protection, Regulation 643.8 requires that it should be:

The Appendix also recognizes that some of the signs and notices may, in modern installations, be provided on electronic displays, where there are additional standards for legibility. It was noted that those testing RCDs in the field would find it difficult to carry out the variety of tests permitted and may not know which of the available tests would be applicable to a given make or type of RCD. Further information on RCD operating and non-operating times can be found in the relevant product standards. Type A and Type AC RCCBs and RCBOs are manufactured to BS EN 61008 and BS EN 61009 respectively, whereas Type F and Type B RCCBs and RCBOs are manufactured to BS EN 62423.Following the release of the 18th Edition Amendment 2 published on 28th March, we have put together a guide to provide everything you need to know on the following areas: A house in multiple occupation is a property rented out by at least three people who are not from one “Household” but share facilities like a bathroom or kitchen.
