About this deal

This is what the fuel rail pressure sensor is for, which is fitted on the fuel rail and measures the fuel pressure inside it. But when the ECU senses an electrical problem with the signal coming from this sensor, it will trigger a P0190 trouble code. This can be caused by the sensor itself, its connector, and the wiring that goes to the ECU. I write this information down because it may be helpful as the diagnostic process continues. Now, I would clear the codes and test-drive the vehicle if possible. If this is not the case, suspect that the fuel pressure regulator is defective, there is an open or shorted circuit in one of the fuel pressure regulator control circuits, or that the PCM is bad. A diagnostic scanner, a digital volt/ohmmeter (DVOM), a suitable fuel pressure gauge, and a reliable vehicle information source (such as All Data DIY) will be necessary for diagnosing a code P0090. The P0190 trouble code indicates that there is an issue in the circuit between the engine control unit and the fuel rail pressure sensor. The fuel rail pressure sensor’s function is to measure the fuel pressure in the fuel rail and then report it to the engine control unit. P0190 Trouble Code Symptoms The P0190 trouble code gets stored in the engine control unit’s trouble code memory when there is a problem with the circuit to the fuel rail pressure sensor.

If the PCM input signal proves to be within the manufacturer's specifications and the scanner has a contradictory note, disconnect the connector from the fuel pressure regulator, the fuel pressure sensor and all related control modules. Perform a continuity and resistance test on all circuits and compare the findings with the manufacturer's specifications. Repair or replace system circuits, connectors and / or components as required and delete codes. This information can be extremely useful in diagnosing intermittent conditions that may have contributed to the storage of this code. Continue to delete the code and restart the car to see if it reappears. This will help you determine whether or not the dysfunction is intermittent. If V ref is 4.5 – 5.5 V and Ground is 0 V, RPS should read between 0.5 V and 4.5 V. If otherwise, replace the sensor.

The electronic fuel pressure regulator is used to maintain a constant fuel pressure. Power is supplied to the controller via the PCM module (or the fuel delivery module along with the PCM), and the fuel pressure is monitored by the PCM via the pressure sensor.

Depending on the vehicle, the RPS generally has an operating voltage range. Some Toyota RPS, for example, function between 0.5 V and 4.5 V, measuring 0 psi to 1,885 psi. To diagnose the RPS and its circuit, you’ll need a DMM (digital multimeter) and vehicle-specific EWD (electrical wiring diagram) and repair manuals. Many vehicles equipped with OBD-II systems use a fuel pressure sensor to monitor its pressure. The sensor is of variable resistance. As the fuel pressure increases, the sensor resistance decreases, allowing the system voltage to increase. When the fuel pressure drops, the sensor resistance increases, causing the system voltage to drop. PCM reads these variations of system voltage as fuel pressure and reacts accordingly.
