About this deal

Well, in Resident Evil board games, enemies don’t take their own turns. Instead, not unlike a turn-based strategy computer game, enemies will react as part of your turn. We’ll cover that in more detail in the reaction phase, below. Prepare to enter the terrifying universe of Resident Evil in Steamforged Games’ Resident Evil 2: The Board Game. Dare you venture through the streets of Raccoon City and enter the desolate and dead filled RPD? Survival horror is the name of the game, and survival will not come easily. Being young was awkward, when you weren't hiding behind the controller that is! Remember not knowing how to talk to someone you liked? So you'd awkwardly sort of be around them and existed continually, never making progress or effort to let them know you were there? The T-00 Tyrant doesn't. He has no fear. No reservations. He's a successful go-getter and a man on a mission. He knows what he wants, and he wants you. (Dead!)

Just as I found with Steamforged’s Dark Souls-inspired board game, there are slight imperfections in many of these plastic figures. Defects ranged from warped bases that caused characters to wobble on the table, to multi-part minis being assembled incorrectly. The issues are nothing that a little handiwork can’t fix, but for the price I’d rather not spend my time repairing and rebasing when I could be playing the game instead. The main new mechanic for this expansion is the introduction of Mr X. Unlike other enemies within the game, his pursuit is relentless and he appears in every scenario. His only goal is to kill you and the other survivors, and he is pretty good at his job! The introduction of Mr X into a scenario is done through the encounter table or through specific Tension Cards. Either way, you're not going to be able to avoid him for long! So, let’s walk through how to play a turn in Resident Evil: The Board Game, to see how those pillars are realised on the tabletop... Player Turns On top of that, we had full ammo from the free choice set-up. If you are going to include it in a free play scenario, I’d seriously recommend you don’t allow it to leave its spawn room. In the campaign however, the Giant Moth is far more intimidating as you’ll be going in half prepared and suffering from everything you’ve previously experienced, as was intended! Component Quality and Replay-abilityWhen you end your turn, the next player will have their turn, and so on. Soon, you’ll find yourselves spread out across the mansion, perhaps too far to call for help… but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Stepping into the boots of your chosen S.T.A.R.S. character and heading into the mysterious Spencer Mansion, your exploration of that sinister place will be divided into turns. If you’d rather save your ammunition (and of course, in true survival horror fashion, you’ll run out of ammo a long while before you run out of enemies…), you’ll need to carefully position enemies by lining up runs past them.

Like Into the Darkness, Bleak Outpost includes six gripping new scenarios and adds 8 hours of extra gameplay to your Resident Evil: The Board Game campaigns. That’s been your overview of how to play Resident Evil: The Board Game, but stay tuned. We’ve got new mechanics to explore and bosses to encounter in future articles coming very soon. Resident Evil 2: The Board Game follows the story of the A-Side of the video game counterpart and follows heroes Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield as they fight against hordes of the dead to survive, solve puzzles and escape before it is too late! However, zombies are not the only thing lurking in the shadows.

If you’ve played the Resident Evil 2 or 3 board games, you’ll already have an idea of the basic mechanics for this game. And if you’ve never played a Resident Evil board game in your life, but you’re thinking of dipping your toe into the tabletop world of survival horror, you’re in for a treat. You’ll need to figure that out together, because Resident Evil: The Board Game is a cooperative game. If one of you dies, you all fail. So, expect to be talking with your fellow S.T.A.R.S. about which way to turn next. (And remember this later on.) Action PhaseThe undead aren’t the only danger roaming the mansion and its grounds. Strange creatures lurk in the darkness, watching and waiting for their moment to strike.

Resident Evil 2: The Board Game is my type of game. It’s easy to get into, there’s an excellent flow to it, it’s tense, and it requires good cooperation. Honestly, it’s probably the best video game-themed board game that I’ve ever played. I do wish the component quality was better, but the gameplay is very smooth and it really does feel like I’m playing through Resident Evil 2 on the table. Resident Evil 2: The Board Game allows players to follow the narrative for the A-Playthrough of the original videogame, guiding through their characters through the overrun RPD building, darkened sewers, eerie marshalling yard, and finally into the sinister corridors of the underground laboratory. Along the way they'll have to face each of the terrifying enemies you'd expect, culminating in a life or death struggle against William Birkin as they wait for the elevator to take them to safety! With multiple scenarios to play, the game offers hours of survival horror playing time for even the most dedicated fan. But what of the B-Playthrough you ask? Well, that's where the B-Files come in. The Resident Evil 2 theme definitely comes through. If you’re a fan of the video game, you’ll recognize everything, from the characters to the locations to the items you find. Also, the story plays out pretty much exactly as it does in the video game.Tension cards change the game state to keep you guessing at what will happen next, and immerse you in the fight for survival. Either way, you’re not going to be able to avoid him for long! The mechanics are simple, but there are plenty of tough decisions that you have to make. You have to decide which weapons to use, which directions to move, if you should use your precious actions to go get items, and if it’s worth it to kill certain enemies. Fear is an interesting thing. Some people are terrified of heights, some of enclosed spaces, some of needles. It affects us differently and some fears seem irrational to outsiders looking in. Some genius at Capcom noticed this and considered what the most common irrational fear was and decided to slap it into the Resident Evil 2 original video game. And now, Steamforged Games have lovingly hosted it within Resident Evil 2: The Board Game as a mini boss expansion in Murder from Above!
