Question 7: Identifying the sectors involved or impacted, please provide any evidence on the social and economic impacts of sandeel fishing. Far removed from the life-supporting rays of the sun, deep-sea fish live in a world devoid of many food options, which means that energy efficiency is key to survival. As such, many deep-sea dwellers eschew oxygen-burning muscles and the strong, calcium-dense bones found in their shallower-dwelling and more-athletic cousins, such as tuna or swordfish. Deep-sea fish lead more lethargic lives, moving slowly and only when absolutely necessary. Without the developed musculature of surface fish, Psychrolutidae bob along the bottom, unperturbed by the relentless pull of gravity that dogs us up on the surface — until they are hauled up by a trawler and their delicate countenance melts into a permanent pout.

This question received twenty-five individual responses. There were two sets of identical responses (five responses in total), submitted by four different organisations. The ocean pout has an elongated, tapering body with a wide mouth with fleshy lips, the upper lip protruding further than the lower. This species varies in color from yellow through to reddish brown and to grayish-green and is marked with a series of cross like markings running the length of the eel-like body. There is a dark brown line on each side of the head running from the upper rear margin of the eye to the edge of the operculum. [4] The long, continuous dorsal fin does not connect with the caudal fin, however, the anal fin does. The teeth are robust, blunt and conical in shape. [5] The ocean pout is the largest species of eelpout and has reached a maximum published total length of 110cm (43in). [1] Distribution and habitat [ edit ] FMFO contain many important factors for their use in aquafeed, of which contributions to palatability and digestibility are especially important; When marine ingredients are used efficiently, they can produce as much fish through aquaculture as could be achieved via direct consumption; Usually most value can be added by directing by-product fractions to food (via feed) but some non-food applications are also valuable uses of by-products (e.g. chitosan and nutraceuticals); Question 13: Which forms of management could deliver the greatest ecological benefits? For example:

Seven respondents provided evidence on the life history of Norway pout to explain their role in the marine environment. But as summer progressed, temperatures rose and still the rain didn’t come. The river grew too low and hot. Along an 8-kilometer (5-mile) stretch, about one-fifth of the river, hundreds of salmon and trout died.Remember, tuna doesn't count as oily fish. So if you've had a portion of tuna during the week, you can still have up to 2 portions (women) or 4 portions (men) of oily fish. Experts say to counter the effects of drought on salmon, we need to restore a diversity of habitats and rebuild populations. The idea is to have more salmon, with a variety of life history strategies, in more places, so they are best able to respond to changing conditions. One respondent in favour of new measures or limits advocated for an ecosystem-based approach to the management of the fishery. This was based on the fact that Norway pout play a significant role in marine food webs as a key prey species for a variety of fish and seabirds. This response highlighted the ecological benefit of limiting the Norway pout fishery, to give threatened seabirds the ability to recover from their recent population decline. Four responses recommended additional technical measures as the most ecologically beneficial management of the Norway pout.

The Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition advises that if you take supplements containing vitamin A, you should not have more than 1.5mg a day from your food and supplements combined. Pregnant women are advised to avoid taking supplements containing vitamin A, including fish liver oil supplements, as too much vitamin A can be harmful to an unborn baby. Learn more about vitamin A. Eating sustainable fish and shellfishFourthly, a focus on FIFO combined with often negative perceptions about the use of FMFO that are portrayed by some critics, ignores the important contribution that byproduct raw material makes to overall FMFO production. It also ignores the growth in this segment’s proportion as byproduct will make an increasingly significant contribution over time. Question 8a: Please provide any evidence you have on the effect of the current management measures in place to limit the sandeel fisheries in UK waters. Oily fish are the richest source of long-chain omega-3. Some white fish and shellfish also contain long-chain omega-3, but not as much as oily fish. Researchers from the University of Leeds concluded in a 2022 study that TMAO acts like "an anchor point within the water network" by forming strong hydrogen bonds with water molecules. This allows the organism to resist the extreme pressure it is under.

Nine responses (three identical, submitted by two different organisations) provided evidence on the economic importance of sandeel fishing to Denmark, both through the fishing itself and through the production of fishmeal and fish oil. They outlined that Denmark is reliant on UK waters to target sandeels, and that the Danish economy would be impacted by a change in regulation, both economically but also socially with this industry providing employment in Danish coastal communities. It was also discussed that the use of sandeels for fishmeal is essential as feed in aquaculture and agriculture, so these industries (and resulting animal proteins) may also be impacted by any change in regulation.Pregnant women should only eat smoked fish products that have been thoroughly cooked. Catching fish and shellfish Unless your GP advises otherwise, avoid taking fish liver oil supplements when you're pregnant or trying for a baby. These are high in vitamin A (retinol), which can be harmful to your unborn baby. Pregnant women are advised to avoid taking supplements that contain vitamin A. Lunchtime Meal Deal for One: Small fish & chips, one side of either peas, curry or gravy and a 330ml can of drink. Available 11.30am – 3pm Tuna: if you are trying for a baby or are pregnant, you should have no more than 4 cans of tuna a week or no more than 2 tuna steaks a week. This is because tuna contains higher levels of mercury than other fish. If you are breastfeeding, there is no limit on how much tuna you can eat.
