Norman saves Christmas in this story. Could you think of a similar story in which a different character saves Christmas in their own way? Norman ‘skulked’ off when the snails shouted at him. Can you find other words that can be used to describe how a slug moves? Look at the different shades of each colour in the illustrations. Can you mix different Art materials to make new shades of the same colour?

So when it came to book week and one of my daughters asked to be Norman I embraced the challenge. Orange/pink clothes and a few home-made accessories worked wonders. The fabulous new character from Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet , the bestselling, award-winning creators of Barry the Fish with Fingers , I Need a Wee and Supertato!

Look at the silhouette picture of Father Christmas flying across the sky. Could you make a similar picture of your own? Papier-mache the brown tissue paper (you could use brown parcel paper or brown paper bags) around the outside edge to cover the gap. You want this to overlap about a quarter of the way down the side of the doughnut. Use the pink tissue paper to papier-mache the inside gap and bring that up over the doughnut to form the icing. My own children thoroughly enjoyed our Paper Plate Snail craft, with my 19 month old Cakes having a go too! The snails are forming a triangular pattern in one of the illustrations. Can you investigate triangular numbers? Summed up, this is a book young listeners are sure to enjoy. Older listeners/readers, however, could fall either way. It's quirky and ridiculous, and doesn't follow the usual story flow. With all of the fun, it does pull kids into thought without them ever realizing it, and might inspire them to adopt a slug of their own.
