Throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s he was a frequent contributor to the Catholic press in both Britain and America and a prolific author, translator and editor of books on Christian themes. I have been reading these 4 books daily for about 30 years and have learned a tremendous amount of history of my Catholic faith. Father Butler's Lives of the Saints is an amazing book of devotion, arranged to follow the Catholic Church's calendar of feast days, and so is relevant every day of the year. Butler's daily readings from the lives and works of the saints offer readers of all backgrounds the opportunity to engage directly with these great figures. I enjoyed reading and learning about the daily saints, Doctors, and martyrs of the Church in concise, well-written, prose.

It is an older book, though, so sometimes the language used was a bit different than what I am used to, and it is also old enough that some saints' feast days have been moved or other newer saints have superseded the older saints.

I am able to highlight and make notes on those passages that speak to my soul an change highlights and add to current notes or create new ones as read about that life a year later. In the original book, the footnotes were printed in such a small, closely-set typeface, that they were almost unreadable. Arranged day by day, with cross-indexing for easy reference, the text corresponds to the months of the year and contains entries on saints with feast days in that month. The index offers the list of saints from the complete edition, and includes all new canonizations and new dates, making it eh most up-to-date listing of saints available. Ideal for a daily meditation; each Saint’s life is followed by a “lesson” from the life to help us apply the virtues of the Saint to ourselves. He also prepared material for Richard Challoner’s Memoirs of Missionary Priests, a work on the martyrs of the reign of Elizabeth. This supplemental volume is highly recommended to those persons and libraries that already have the new edition of Butler's Lives.
