About this deal

Another issue I encountered with testing other down pillows is a strong, musty smell that lingers long after first use.

The pillow does arrive in a bigger box than you might expect, but as we said in our Simba Hybrid Pillow review, it is a big beast, so there's not much to be done about that. For this test we worked our way through a constant rotation of new pillows, looking for those that helped us sleep better. Despite being packed with tiny cubes on the inside, you wouldn't know it from the outside – when pressing and squeezing it, it feels springy and full, with a nice level of firmness and I couldn't detect any cubes at all, which reassured me it wouldn't feel like lying on a bean bag.To sleep on, the cubes feel like a middle ground between a traditional down filling and memory foam.

Travel pillows should provide comfort above all else, but we kept in mind different kinds of sleepers and their preferences when testing, too. This versatility comes in the form of three removable layers – two softer Simba Renew layers and one firm Aerocoil layer, which contains springs encased in foam. It offers excellent value for money, has a crisp 100 per cent cotton casing and a soft, if slightly flat, filling.Which features of the Simba Hybrid pillow set it apart from a feather pillow and other pillows available on the market that we have tested?

Tempur's Original Support Pillow isn't your average pillow; it has a curve to it that's designed to give your head and neck maximum comfort and support. The temperature control technology and breathability are the best on the market and fully use Simba's market-leading technology. When I saw the height of the Simba, I knew the full loft of it would be too high for me and after spending a night on it at full capacity, I was proved right; it felt too high for my sleep position and neck. With two softer layers also included, Simba’s pillow also provides exceptional levels of comfort and posture support. The understated cover design makes it look less like a budget option, too, although it is polyester, so not quite as breathable as a natural fibre. These are surrounded by a plush-feeling microfibre layer, so you don’t feel like you’re sleeping on a stack of sugar cubes).

Other excellent features are the two sides of the pillow, the adjustable loft, and being 100% hypoallergenic, sustainable and eco-friendly.Achieving the right height for your personal preference is a journey and it took a few nights for me to get it exactly right. Travel pillows on the other hand have come a long way – there’s everything from lightweight blow-up ones to wrap around temperature regulating ones, meaning you can be up in the sky or huddled in a field and still feel the comforts of home sweet home. However, synthetic is a popular choice for those with allergies and for a pillow that will bounce back even after a run through the washing machine (for the avoidance of doubt, here's how to clean a pillow). Think of it as a memory foam sandwich: its three layers of squishy foam come apart, so you can customise the height depending on how much lift you need (which will vary depending on your height and sleep position) and how soft your mattress is.
