About this deal

Hide and Seek is a 1964 British thriller film directed by Cy Endfield and starring Ian Carmichael, Curt Jurgens and Janet Munro. Unknown to them, Garrett has rigged the alarm on his wristwatch to cause the boat to explode, killing the three henchmen.

At the meeting, the Major tells Garrett that he must stop socialising with Melnicker since he is a known communist.

The Radio Times Guide to Films gave the film 2/5 stars, writing: "After a decade top-lining some of the wittiest social satires ever made in the UK, lan Carmichael's fortunes were on the wane by the time he starred in this leaden comedy thriller. When he goes outside and says this to a cabby, the cabby suggests "King’s Square" in Chelsea, which they drive to. In reality, of course, this is much lighter and at best a comedy thriller in the genre of 'The 39 Steps'; the similarities continue when we are presented with a buttoned-up emotionally repressed academic (Carmichael) paired with a free-spirited, slightly wacky and alluringly beautiful spirit (Janet Munro). The police officer seems to imply that they could just avoid reporting all this to avoid the effort, but Garrett wants to follow all official steps. The random occurrences circumvent this intention and before we know it he has met Janet Munro and is in Yorkshire.

There are shades of Alfred Hitchcock’s man on the run tales here (especially The 39 Steps, which the basic structure loosely resembles), sharing a similar sense of wry humour that runs throughout the story, an ever-so-slightly winking sensibility enhanced by the amount of comedy actors making up the supporting cast. Garrett is starting to doubt he is in the correct place, when he sees Maggie talking to Richter and finds a room upstairs with a chessboard that is missing the knight piece he has.Sadly, the decidedly naff title did summarise and embody the film only too well, both as regards final product and as a description of the plot. Looking along Blechynden Street W10 with Mersey Street to the right, Oldham Road to the left and the junction with East Mews Road in the distance. Maggie deliberately reads the road sign incorrectly and makes them walk in the opposite direction to where they should be going. Directed by the BAFTA-nominated Cy Endfield, whose credits include Zulu and Hell Drivers, Hide And Seek also stars Oscar winner Hugh Griffith, Bond villain Curt Jurgens and Golden Globe-winning British actress Janet Munro; the film is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio. Needless to say it doesn't quite have the pizzazz of Hitchcock's masterpiece, but it does display Munro's willingness to disrobe on camera, something which I am sure The Master would have appreciated.

Curt Jurgens pops up for the finale in a trial run for his Bond villain role and Janet Munro is quite lovely. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows. Director Cy Endfield mishandles the jokier aspects of the plot, in which a scientist working on a top secret project is presumed to have defected when, in actuality, he's been kidnapped. The shot was used in 'Escapade', 'Beat Girl' and 'Left, Right and Centre' while the water troughs can also be seen in 'One Wild Oat' and 'Train of Events'. Facing south towards Grove Bridge (No 164) on the Grand Union Canal near Chandlers Cross, Hertfordshire located by Anthony Spencer. He meets up with an old mentor and friend, Frank Melnicker, who is playing multiple games of chess at a display of simultaneous play at a temperance hall.

Alongside him is the lively Janet Munro, and the two make enjoyable company as the plot carries off rather well. Garrett starts to walk down the road and comes across a policeman on a bicycle who goes back to the cliff with him.Ian Carmichael – one of British cinema’s most accomplished character actors and immortalised in the television role of P. King's Parade appear in 'Nothing But the Best' and a similar view can be seen in 'Out of the Shadow' and 'Franklyn'. It was one of several British films released in 1964 after spending well over a year on the shelf - others included "The Leather Boys", "Ladies Who Do" and "The Comedy Man". It is revealed that this was all an elaborate trap to trick Garrett to "voluntarily" come to this hotel - he has been used like a pawn in a chess game. The difference being that there is no case of mistaken identity and being an astrophysicist, Carmichael does not need to rely on dumb luck to get himself out of a situation.
