About this deal

This book is about resistance; about insurgency and — as it turns out — violent revolution, and what it takes for a tiny community to push back against the state. Beautifully and evocatively written in prose that's by turns gentle and harsh, personal and impersonal, The Carhullan Army is a book about women much more than it is a book about future catastrophe. Britain after its union with the United States and numerous unsuccessful foreign wars, has found itself in the grip of a severe fuel crisis and the country is now under the control of a severe body known as The Authority. First I read a review of The Carhullan Army on Vishy’s blog (here) and immediately thought I’d love to read it.

I liked this one a lot more than other dystopian books like Station Eleven, in which it bothered me that all these people lived around the Great Lakes, yet no one seemed concerned about preparing for winter. The Carhullan Army, as the group is known, is led by Jackie (Jacks) Nixon who has few rules but who ensures that those rules are adhered to. The conceit of the book is that it is a found text, which allows the author to pretend that parts of it have been lost, I think if I had been her editor, I would have pushed her to make the text more fragmentary than it is, suffice it to say this makes the narrative jump in places, some readers looking at other reviews didn't like it, I thought it passing clever to avoid having to spell out everything that happened and I've got enough grey hairs that I don't feel the need to read every detail anymore - you can kill a story too by over telling it. What Sister takes from sex and her attitude towards it change and develop as she herself changes and develops. A Handmaid's Tale for our times, this exhilarating novel pits political oppression against the will to survive, in a nightmarishly believable vision of Britain in the near future.Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them. To the right of the porch (the early-C18 extension) there are four windows: the two first floor and one of the ground floor windows are two-light stone mullions. And when Sister goes back to lovemaking with men as she trains for war, sex becomes little more than an angry and brutal need. Under the repressive regime of The Authority, citizens have been herded into urban centres, and all women of child-bearing age fitted with contraceptive devices.

like Doris Lessing's Canopus in Argos, The Carhullan Army is much concerned with law and violence: the point at which the hand that rocks the cradle must pick up a gun.Her jawline was thicker, though still slightly misshapen, crooked, with the smile worn higher on the left, as if she had always favoured the teeth on that side when she ate . The work that The Carhullan Army now most resonates with for me is Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s 1980s graphic novel V For Vendetta (which I didn’t mention in the passage above, but which plenty of others have). Summary: Rich, heady prose reflects prisms of ideas, moods, themes and visions in this slender dystopian novel, but its main focus is gender. This charming community, Bampton in the Eden District of Cumbria, is nestled in the scenic Lowther valley and within reaching distance of the River Lowether. But this intimate concern with the physical is of a piece with the sensual collection of short stories Hall published in 2011, The Beautiful Indifference. It brought a gentle ache to my chest to have her hug me at the end of a dinner shift and then walk away to her bed, or rest a hand on my shoulder and ask if I was faring OK when she saw my cuts and bruises, my newly shaved head…Shruti held back, as I did.Hosting three bedrooms, including a super-king-size with en-suite shower room, a zip/link super-king-size with Smart TV and en-suite shower room, and a double with Smart TV and en-suite bathroom, along with a ground-floor shower room, this property can sleep up to six guests. A woman known as ‘Sister’ leaves her oppressive marriage to join an isolated group of women in a remote northern farm at Carhullan, where she intends to become a rebel fighter. Sarah Hall is garnering a reputation as a strong regional voice with her flavoursome historical fiction . The Carhullan Army, however, is the real thing: a hard book, unforgiving, surprising, and sometimes disturbing. Inside the building are some original moulded ceiling-beams, a fireplace with a corbelled head and a panelled partition and doors.

She simply gave us the power to remake ourselves into those inviolable creatures the God of Equality had intended us to be. It actually seems slightly jarring to see the setting referred to as ‘rural England’, with the connotations that has for me of Kent or Somerset. In Carhullan, preparing and daily work are ever-present and keep from over-glamorizing the dystopia.

The main south-east elevation has a right end chimneystack and a right of centre ridge chimneystack.
