Female colonists employed slaveholding as a means of advancing themselves socially and financially on the island. She has lost siblings to violence and accidents but used those tragedies to fuel her passion for football. While many women served in taverns, washed and mended clothes, or provided sexual services, some became merchants and property owners, which include enslaving people. Not much is known about the patterns of inheritance in Jamaica during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but like our understanding of other aspects of the island, what does exist emphasizes the masculine nature of property holding. As slavery's beneficiaries, these women worked to stabilize and propel this brutal labor regime from its inception.
