They are perhaps best remembered for their successful singles " Thank U Very Much" (1967) and the UK number 1 " Lily the Pink" (1968). he brought up a British band that I had heard for what I think was the first time ever earlier that very day — the oddly organized site that is Pandora. Tracks which were first released from 1973 onward show the artist as Scaffold (rather than The Scaffold). Avoiding a career in Merseybeat, McGear concentrated on his photography and drifted into the charts in a somewhat sideways manner. The "Aintree Iron" was revealed by John Gorman on BBC Radio Merseyside in 2022 to be one of the first motorised taxi cabs in England.

The members of the Scaffold were originally part of a performing revue group known as The Liverpool One Fat Lady All Electric Show. In 1970 The Scaffold starred in their own popular weekly BBC children's television series, Score with the Scaffold.
